Buck and Case sit down to dinner

My wife's huge extended family has their Christmas dinner on the Saturday before, then they all spend Christmas Day with their own smaller families. So last night we all got together, but the planning was not what it might have been. Plenty of food but no plastic knives or spoons, only forks.Wimpy forks at that.

Eating ham with only a very cheap plastic fork is a problem, so out came the Buck 55 from my left pocket.This drew a look of disgust from my wife, who disapproves of pocket knives at the table. I started to pull the Buck Vantage from my right pocket for her to use but she stopped me. Then I noticed my brother in law using a sweet vintage Case 2-bladed traditional folder on his ham. He is a Case fan, even named his dog "Case."

Other people were eating by hand or making sandwiches with their rolls but my brother and law and I ate in style, with no arguing about which brand was best. Let there be peace on earth!

Pond, I'm glad this affair worked out well. I know the look of askance you mention from my wife as well. Being a Colonel's daughter. Because I've pulled out my 110 to cut roast beef before. It was the only sharp knife in the house. Now I come early and sharpen their knives. This makes all happy. DM
 
Case and Buck can coexist together.:D As matter of fact I like both, carry both and collect both. I grew up on Buck knives but many years ago was given a Case Muskrat. I foolishly gave it away to a young man when I was going of to college because I wasn't into Case knives then. Ten years ago this Christmas my wife bought me a Case mini trapper for Christmas after one caught my eye at "the big fishy store".

It started a new addiction and actually is what got me back into knives as far as collecting. Up to that point I had a Buck 301,703, 110, Vanguard AG and an old Schrade barlow from when I was a kid. Since then I have tried many different knives and styles. I still have more Bucks than any other brand but on the flip became a life member of the Case collectors club about 9 years ago.

I like Buck and Case a lot. There are a lot of brands I like. I think for the money these two American brands are hard to beat.

I hope I don't get in trouble for saying this but this is just my opinion so if this is out of line mods feel free to remove it. I personally like Buck's fixed blades and lockblades better than Case, but prefer Case's slip joints a little more.:o
 
I have my Buck, Case and Schrade's trained not to argue or fight with each other or the Colt and Rough Riders.
 
My wife is peculiar about me cutting food with my pocketknife - she says there is no telling where it has been and won't cut hers with it, even if she has to use a sorry plastic knife. Now, as to the Colonel's opinion - well I'm happy cutting my food with my pocketknife! OH

Some pocket knives make better table knives than others. I particularly like the large Case Sodbuster for this. Often have thought about a Buck Sodbuster in black phenolic and flat grind.
 
I love all knives to be honest, but none quite like I love Buck knives. Can't speak to Case, but I can say that Kabar knives get along just fine with Buck knives for the most part.
 
I like both as well. I have more Bucks, but Case is usually the other brand on my radar. I rotate between a 112, 110 and Case trappers. Today I have a Case on my belt. I prefer the as ground blades on the trappers and there aren't that many available. Both are made in the USA and both look and perform great...
 
I have a 317 in my pocket 99% of the time. So when we are out or at home and "normal /plastic " knives won't do my wife always asks for the Buck. She carries small Bucks 503, 506, 505 clippers (not all at once) but most times it's a job for the big boy. So Bucks knives do make an appearance meal times quite often. The 317 is best steak knife I ever used, carved the Thanksgiving turkey with it.
On the topic of Case .... I am a folding hunter/trapper knife aficionado and just wish Buck still made them and did the job Case does with variety.
 
This is exactly why I carry a sharp pocket knife all the time. There is no telling how many cookouts (yes!) and parties I have been to and had the only knife! Sometimes, the only sharp knife, but sometimes the only knife period. If that won't make your head spin I do not know what will. I have had to cut the meat on the grill for the wannabe chefs or cut the roast, etc. on the table or my plate. I never leave home without a pocket knife, period.

Boy o boy, do I relate to this post.

I blame this on the years I've spent backpacking where I used a folding knife for eating... but I've come to accept, however unmanly it is, that food prep is one the most important uses of a pocket knife for me.

Several things emerge as being important for my every day carry as a result...

It must be a pocket knife. I can't get used to holster carry (I've tried for years) and a fixed blade is too cumbersome.

It must reach the bottom of the peanut butter jar, as Cliff Jacobsen argued. It also must reach across the fat submarine sandwich I need to cut.

It must have enough belly to spread the peanut butter or cream cheese.

It must be flat ground, or flat enough to slice potatoes well.

I hope the Ecolite 110 will come back and when it does, I hope it will be a bit thinner and that the drop point is an option.

I don't carry a knife as often as I should. I've been caught numerous times needing a knife, but not having one. Stories like this remind me that I should carry a knife more often.

Even a tiny and pretty knife is better than none! Buck makes some, too.

Check out the small cute Buck's, or Case's for that matter. But you won't be able to slice a watermelon!
 
I was checking the 55 out on Buck's website. I really like the way it looks being a mini 110 and all. I don't really need a little knife in order to carry one around. When I do carry a knife, I alternate between my old 112 or my Coast Rapid Response RX311. The 112 is a little hefty, but I like that. I like the size with the 3" blade (the Coast has a 3" blade, too), and the weight won't let me forget it's there. Heck, even the 110 fits in my pocket well enough to carry if I wanted to. I just have to get in the habit of carrying a knife. I could have used one yet again this morning to cut twine on bales. One day I'll learn. :o
