Once in awhile there are Rigid Knives from the 70's up for sale. Some of them really remind me of Buck knives. Does anyone know if there was some common tie between the 2 Companies, like if the Rigid founder was an ex-Buck employee??

I don't know. Maybe Rigid was making straight out copies back then since the design was never patented?

Bill Duff and Don Collaman started Rigid knives, They both worked for Buck Knives back in the 60s and 70s, Don died back in the mid 80s, Bill duff is still makeing customs down in Oklahoma. Paul.

thanks Paul! man do i ever stand corrected on the rigid knive !!!
some times the train dont get put back were it should be..

i still think there was a Kline marked knife made by buck...
i jest dont have enught good wide awake brain cells to rember the details...

Thanks for putting me on the spot Paul! :grumpy: :D :D
My answer is the same as yours....I dunno.
It seems to me that when they parted with Buck, it was not on the most friendly of terms. Nothing major but certainly not to where they might ask BUck to make knives for them. Also, back then it was all we could do to keep up with orders for our own products, not too much, if any, OEM work done during that timeframe.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Paul & Joe, that explains some of those Buck-ish style designs of early Rigid knives. Did Bill & Don work in the Custom shop by any chance??

Scott: They were both Suppervisors on the line. They both just liked makeing knives so they went out on there own, Bill Duff makes some mighty fine Customs. Paul. Joe you know I like putting you on the spot. Paul.

also i was told by cold steel in atlanta that there was suposed to be some
oem made for them buy buck but that it ended only being a few proto-types.

Off the top of my head I can remember a model 525 that was stamped, as Dave pointed out, Klien. (Or Klein?)
We were doing, or going to do, blades for Cold Steel too, but I dont know how far we got into that before the whole idea was scrapped.
Also, we ground some blades for the 192 Smatchet, I think it was 500 pieces?
And while we had a custom shop we did some blades for a company called Cedar Creek. I remember a large and small fillet knife and a bowie like knife which was called, I believe, a Stinger. The Cedar Creek knives had a great handle, it kind of wrapped around the top and bottom of your hand.
I hope this helps.

I have Rigid "Black Feather," which was one of the earliest bolsterless, linerless lightweight folders. The handle is black Micarta and the blade is the spitting image of a Buck 112, so its lineage is obvious. It's a beautifully made knife.
