Buck apex question

Just curious about the buck apex. It states on the buck website that it is imported. But the website also claims 420hc and bos heat treat. How is this possible? Are they grinding heat treated blanks in china?

Since Paul no longer works for Buck the Bos heat treat isn't done by Paul but rather per his process by Paul Farner who worked with Paul Bos. I would imagine it can be called "Bos heat treat" regardless where it's done as long as it follows his methods so the Apex is probably done entirely off shore. I have all three Apex models and none have the Bos symbol, nor are they marked with the steel type.

I don't know the real answer to your question. However, I've been using my Redpoint, which is an import with the 420hc blade that according to the website is Bos heat treated. It has held up very well and kept sharp with semi hard use. I am very impressed. I stayed away from the imported Bucks for a long time but could not pass up the deal on this Redpoint ($15 nib) I like it so much I will be getting a purple Apex for my wife and hopefully a Flashpoint LE for me in the future.

I am in no way questioning the quality. I like my apex very much. I have the carbon fiber model. It was a gift and after receiving it I decided to do some research on it which is why I posed the question. Thanks for the replies!

It could be a website error. I know Buck has had problems with the website in the past. I have an Apex but there is no way to identify the steel. I do carry it and like it.

May be a mistake. Unfortunately if it is every place selling them is advertising them as 420hc.

Their website says 420HC, the 2015 catalog says 420HC (just checked it on the BCCI website) and the retailers list them as 420HC. I'm kinda leaning heavily to them being 420HC. You could give Buck a call and I'm sure they can/will confirm the heat treat and steel but they may not want to divulge how or where the steel gets to the manufacturer.

I just called Buck and according to the Buck factory it is a European made knife. And the steel they use is like our 420HC. I will try to find my box and see if there is more info there.

Then why are they marked CHINA on the knife? Makes no sense if they are made in Europe. China is Asia.

I am so confused now. Maybe the factory is confused. I did go in the other room and get my knife and now see the China.
