Anyone used these two knives? I was wondeing which one would be better for EDC. I won't be using either knife for anything unreasonable such as prying or batoning. Deployment speed is not an issue for me. Also, which knife has the tighter lockup? Which knife is tougher?

Thanks in advance

I have both, like them both to, but the Cara Cara is in a whole different class than the Bantam 286.

The Buck has no liners, just a synthetic handle, while the Cara Cara, even the FRN version has steel liners.

What about the steel department? How does bucks 420HC compare to the 8Cr13MoV?

Hard to tell. The Buck Bantams are made in China, so they will have a Chinese alloy that is close to 420HC, but actually isn't (5Cr13MoV springs to mind, but there is no way to tell.)

I have a Byrd in 8Cr13MoV and I have a Buck in actual 420HC. When I tested them for edge retention, the 8Cr13MoV held an edge noticeably longer. You might see the difference in actual everyday use or you might not. It depends on how you use an EDC.

I don't think that you will be disappointed no matter which one you buy.

I love the Cara Cara G10. Not unlike what I serve my friends its strong and cheap.

Thanks for the replies. I remember Reading about a test on the cutleryscience website where they cut through 40m of cardboard with a VG-10 endura and a 8Cr13MoV cara cara. I think you guys have seen it before. Should I be taking what I read there with a pinch if salt? Or take it as the truth?

I own both, and while the buck is a great knife for a great price, the cara cara feels like it is in another class, in terms of fit and finish. It definitely feels more expensive, while the buck is more of a back-to-basics, no-frills knife that'll do the job. I use the cara cara as an edc, cause it's just nicer to hold, and the buck as a dependable backpacking knife that can handle a lot of abuse (for a folder).

I doubt you'll notice that big of a difference in the steel quality. I don't, and I'm picky about stuff like that.

Just bought the FRN version of the Cara Cara, after my G10 version was stolen last year. It is a great knife for the prize, you get a long blade, steel liners and great ergonomics. Besides, I really love the 8Cr13MoV (I just wish they would come up with a better name), it sharpens really easy and takes an amazing edge. Go for the Cara Cara, you won't be disappointed!

Why would you want a Buck Bantam when you could have one of the new USA-made Bucklights for the same price?

Indeed. Think I'll just start calling it 8cromov (atecromov phonetic)or something.
