i want to add a few more Bucks to my collection but need to know a few basics first. i have searched this forum but have not found enough to put it all together.
where was Buck located before 1980 ? did quality change with move from California to Idaho ? is Idaho outline on tang only on knives made there ? there have been 2 or 3 ? changes in steel for 110s & 112s; is there an accepted "preferred" ? and finally which models are produced in Tiawan or China ? or put another way, how can one distinguish these with a vague ebay listing and no tang pics ? thanks for any & all help roland

Dago from 1945-68, then El Cajon (suburb of San Diego)
did quality change with move from California to Idaho ?

IMHO, I think it was bumpy at first, but the noise level seems to have settled down. If the new Kalinga series is any evidence, I think the tooling/quality has improved

is Idaho outline on tang only on knives made there ?
2005 knives only (http://www.buckknives.com/collectors_vintage.php)

there have been 2 or 3 ? changes in steel for 110s & 112s; is there an accepted "preferred" ?

"Preferred"? Your mileage may vary.

and finally which models are produced in Tiawan or China ?
The Buck site has placed a USA flag next to items that are made in the US

Rotsa ruck Joe, I mean "Lorand"... ;)

Before anyone crawls up my hole as being racist...I'm half Nihon, born there. Lighten up Francis.

thanks Buckaholic, i like to know the history of the company and it's knives so when buying one, i know how, or where, it "fits in". as for distiguishing U.S. from non-U.S. Bucks on ebay, i'm sure the experienced folks here can do that. i can with Schrade with ~ 99% accuracy, but that has taken 6 months on Schrade forum and ebay. i'm just looking for any shortcuts here. roland

Hey Roland...
You are welcome.
I hope ya stick around here for at least 6 months too and share some of your Buck stuff :)

Hello Roland,
Here is a little more detail on Buck's location.
1945-2004 San Diego.
During that time, the Buck factory was all over San Diego in a couple of suburbs:
San Diego- 1945 to 1963
Lemon Grove- from 1964 to 1969
El Cajon- 1969 to 2004

Hope this helps.

from time to time you can find a book called the story of buck knives on evil e
it is a tad dated but most information on early years is very good and it is ware a lot of us buckaholics go first for information ...
{{but shuss... dont tell any one i was reviealing classified informations!!!!}}}:p
