I was looking on the Buck Knives web page a couple of months ago maybe and saw that the Big Sky was offered with walnut scales and a brown leather sheath. I re-visited the site recently and did not find that option offered still. Is this still an obtainable configuration from the factory? I have been trying to justify yet another blade and I hope this wasn't a short time offer.

Also, the last posts about the Big Sky was a couple of months ago, any owners have recent comments?

Thanks.

Tuckair,

I know we are still offering the Big Sky in both brown and black Obechee wood handles. I will have our Web guy check and see if it is also listed there properly.

Thanks Joe, I guess I have one less reason now to buy another knife. I look forward to ordering one and will post some feedback after I have played with it awhile.

The brown Big Sky is still available. I've had no problem ordering them for stock.

They aren't fast movers in the sales department but they do move. I haven't heard anything about them being discontinued and my rep is pretty good about that.

I am surprized that they aren't on the website though.

At one point all of the new products disappeared from the site. Now only the strider is listed.

Thanks, Dennis and Joe.

Dennis, do you have any feedback about the knife. I'm looking for a nice mid-size utility blade for basic uses. Since it would ideally be the sole companion to a larger chopping tool I carry out in the woods, I'm looking for something pretty useful and sturdy. The Big Sky looks to fit the job. Thanks.

(There. That's better.)

As of about 10 minutes ago the 2000 product catalog is back on line on our web site.

To make a short story long we moved our site from one host to another in hopes of getting better reliability. We QC'd every little detail of the site after the change but let one really big thing get by; it was using last year's product database for the last two weeks.

Wait 'til I get my hands on who ever was responsible for that!!!! :-/

Curt, sorry for taking so long to reply. Got a little busy and forgot.

The feedback that I have received on the Big Sky has been generally favorable. Folks like the compact size of the knife and E2K grind makes it a fine cutter. It's a good overall tool for tasks from skinning to general camp chores. the only critical comments have been about the sheath. Some people don't like the metal belt clip and would rather have a more traditional belt sheath.

If that metal belt clip gets bent out by the sheath getting snagged on something and pulled away from the body, it can't be bent back into position. I've seen at least one sheath that had to be replaced because of that. Buck should really do something about that but I don't know if they have had any complaints to let them know that there is a problem.

The knife itself is a winner though.

Hope this helps.

Can anyone tell me what steel the Big Sky is ofered in? I read that it is likely 420HC, but haven't seen confirmation of that on the web site. Thanks!

Michael,

420HC is the steel used for the Big Sky. I will check with our web guy to see if that could be added tot he site.
