Picked up these three, (NIB) quite a while back and finally took some pics. From what I've been able to learn from the BCCI website they were listed in the 1990 and 91 catalogs and consisted of the 301 Stockman, 303 Cadet, 305 Lancer and the 309 Companion. My 301 and 309 have the 1991 + date code but the 305 has the 1992 - date code. Did Buck just forget to put these in the 1992 catalog or perhaps they made this one as well as others from left over parts in 1992 with a 92 dated blade?

The Companion is awfully small but I still really like all three of these models. The Buck Bone has a great look and feel to it and the construction of all three, even with the vast difference in sizes is top shelf. Even though they don't have the same date codes I'm keeping my eye out for a 303BB Cadet to "complete" the set, so to speak.

If anyone else has some of these I'd love to see some pics and any info you have would be greatly appreciated. To be honest it's been quite a struggle to keep the Stockman out of my pocket. Just love the size and look and the Stockman pattern is about my favorite pattern of slipjoint, right along the Trapper. TIA

Nice snag! So why are you trying to keep them out of your pocket? They carry real well and are made to be used. I have a copy of the 301 myself and it gets pocket time. Not much but it does get it.

As far as date codes go, I think they came to the end of the run and realize they were short blades and went with the '92 blade. Really, anything goes when it comes to Buck. They will surprise you at every turn. I love the knives and I think I sold all of mine but I will look. I had to thin the masses.

I've got plenty of Buck and other brand slipjoints to carry and when I run across something like these that are NIB and a relatively short production run I really hate to ruin that condition by carrying them. If they were the only knives I had it wouldn't even be a question about using them or not but since I've got other options I try and control my urges. I can always carry and use them but I can't make them NIB again.

Thanks for checking MB. Looking through the catalogs Buck also offered some 110, 500 series and a couple of other slipjoints in the early 90's like the Clipper and two different size trapper models that, at least in the catalog look to have similar scale material but they refer to those as brown bone, not Buck Bone. Wonder if it's the same thing, different name or are they actually two different materials?

It was the same thing, The brown bone was referred to as Buck bone.

Great looking knives. I like that Buck bone. It looks really nice. Thanks for sharing the photographs.

Bad,

Seems like lots of folks like these bone scales. First a indirect answer to you questions. These Brown Bone or Buck Bone knives were made during the transition from brass liners to all stainless construction. So in the world of the knife "collector"(whatever that is) there are two versions or is it variations of the Brown bones. Looks like you have the second vari/version. 300Bucks

Those are beautiful! Yes, all three of mine are steel liners. Knowing there are two variations gives me something else to look for. Thanks for posting.
