What does Buck offer for Bowie knives and bigger knives like in the 9 1/2 to 13in blade range? Haven't seen anything on the site or anywhere. How about survival knives?

When I worked part time at a cutlery store, I did get a look at a few that were an exclusive product of the custom shop.

Buffing was used unsuccessfully to cover up a bad solder job of a brass bar unto the back. That was back in 1980. The new custom shop will do a better job. -Brian

Since Buck has discontinued the Frontiersman (124) there isn't anything in the large bowie class in the Buck catalog right now.

As far as survival knives are concerned, with the demise of the Buckmaster and M9 bayonet, the only things left are the Intrepid, Kit Carson designed series.

There are two types in two sizes. The 189s are 11 3/4" overall with a 6 1/2" blade in either tanto or chisel point. They are the biggest ones in the catalog right now and they are really tough, hard working knives. The 187s are the same knife scaled down to 9 1/2" overall with a 5 1/2" blade.

That leaves the Nighthawk series for survival/field knives but I wouldnt categorize them as large knives.

Personally, I would like to see a large (8" - 9 1/2") blade on the Nighthawk handle. I'd call it "Big Iron".

Tuff, if you'll e-mail me your address, I'll send you a Buck catalog.

Thansk a lot Dennis, I'm sending it right now. That's too bad the M9 was discontinued, that was the type of knife I was looking for...

Tuff I wish Buck whould bring the 124 back this was a great knife.(big old heavy camp knife)

tpaulos. i'm not too farmiliar with that knife, I have never seen it before.

No, the General, model 120, is still in the lineup. The Frontiersman was the 124. It went down last year.

I still have some M9s left. they are all black, with black scabbards.

Hey Tuff! I was searching for info on my buck, a mod 124 when I saw your post. I made a quick scan of mine so you can see what they look like. I made it very small so the image would be small

It's a solid knife but I want something with more of a thick edge. I like choping things.
I bent the edge on a buck 110 folder trying to cut down a green bamboo stalk in Japan and it makes me nervous to use a thin edge like that again. I didn't realize how tough even the green (living) stuff is.

Jeff,

Don't forget the Mountain Man, the Apache, and the Mountain Bowies. All three are great versions of the Bowie knife.
