Buck Bucklock 1 531 Sawby Knife Rare Vintage Box Papers

I have this in the General Knife Forum and was told I should repost it here for the Buck knife people.

A Buck Bucklock 1 Model 531 Sawby knife. Knife is mint, box shows just a little shelfwear. All paperwork and sheath. This is a rare knife that Buck discontinued due to safety concerns.

I noticed some of them didn't have the tang markings where the original ones were (like this one) also the others lacked the Pat number on the blade. This one is as close to perfect as I could find in this knife.

PS:I have received the knife and it locks very well.

PPS: This was posted to me in another knife site: From reading what was posted at Blade, it appears you have one of 75 known to be left untouched. Your blade is marked for 1988, so it was made in the first batch (or the blades were made in 88 and the knives assembled in 89.)

That's a great find. A Hans Sawby. He lives in Idaho near Buck's plant at Sand Flat. DM

A Question, if I do have one of the first 75 built (I think I do). Were they recalled ? If so than I might have one in less than 75. What do you all think ?

I haven't found specific numbers produced, but that same knife in the BCCI Club Edition won an award;

NEWSLETTER NUMBER 7 PAGE 1
1990 BUCK COLLECTORS CLUB KNIFE VOTED -KNIFE OF THE YEAR" AT THE BLADE SHOW IN KNOXVILLE
YES, IT'S TRUE! OUR CLUB KNIFE WAS CHOSEN AS KNIFE OF THE YEAR FOR IT'S COLLECTORS AND INVESTORS VALUE AND WILL BE FEATURED IN THE NEXT ISSUE OF BLADE MAGAZINE. THE JUDGING WAS DONE BY THE OTHER MANUFACTURERS; EACH EXHIBITOR VOTED ON ALL KNIVES EXCEPT HIS OWN. IN OTHER WORDS, PEOPLE LIKE CASE, WESTERN, PARKER, BERETTA, ETC. GAVE US THIS HONOR!
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT ANY CLUB KNIFE HAS WON THIS COVETED HONOR, IT IS BOUND TO BRING A LOT OF ATTENTION TO OUR CLUB AND IS BOUND TO HAVE A BIG POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE VALUE OF YOUR KNIFE. ON SATURDAY AT THE SHOW TWO EXHIBITORS HAD PLAIN 531'S FOR SALE AT $150; ON SUNDAY,(AFTER THE AWARDS BANQUET ON SAT.NIGHT) I HEARD THE PRICE ON THEM WAS $250 .

Here is the only other information I've come up with out of the BCCI Newletter archives;

MODEL 531 NEWS: THERE ARE TWO DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT BLADE MARKS THAT APPEAR ON THE ORIGINAL 531: THE CLUB KNIVES ARE MARKED 531~ AS ARE MOST OF THE PRODUCTION KNIVES. THERE ARE SOME THAT BEAR A MARK THAT INDICATES 1989 AS THE YEAR OF MANUFACTURE INSTEAD OF THE SPECIAL 1988 MARK: IT LOOKS LIKE THIS: 531~ IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE, IT IS DEFINITELY MORE RARE THAN THE ~ MARK. I AM ONLY AWARE OF ABOUT 19 OF THESE KNIVES. THE DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO KNIVES IS THE ORIENTATION OF THE LOCK WITHIN THE FRAME SO THE ONLY VISIBLE DIFFERENCE IS THE BLADE STAMP. IF YOU OPERATE BOTH KNIVES, THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY THE LOCK OPERATES IS SUBTLE BUT CAN BE NOTICED. THE CHANGE IN THE WAY THE LOCK WAS ORIENTED IN THE KNIFE WAS AN ATTEMPT TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEMS WITH THE LOCK. AGAIN, IN MY PERSONAL OPINION, THE LOCK WAS FINE BUT BUCK KNIVES, AS A MAJOR CORPORATION, JUST COULD NOT TAKE ANY CHANCES. INCIDENTALLY, THE KNIVES PICTURED ON THE COVER OF THE SPECIAL FOLDER AND ON THE POSTER ARE PROTOTYPES ONLY: NO
PRODUCTION KNIVES WERE MADE WITHOUT A YEAR MARK. (CONSULT NL# 4 FOR YEAR MARKS). THERE WERE SIX OF THE ~ MARKED KNIVES IN THE CLUB KNIVES AND THEY ARE PUT ASIDE FOR YOU REAL BUCKLOCK (531) FANS. BUCK IS NOW IN PRODUCTION ON THE NEW MODEL 531 WHICH HAS A CONVENTIONAL LOCK BUT LOCATED AS A MID FRAME LOCK. THIS KNIFE LOOKS VERY MUCH LIKE THE ORIGINAL 531 BUT IS A LITTLE THICKER AND VERY OBVIOUSLY HAS A DIFFERENT LOCKING MECHANISM. THE BLADE STAMP INDICATES THAT
IT IS STILL A 531: THE KNIVES CURRENTLY BEING PRODUCED ARE MARKED 531 X SINCE THEY WERE MADE IN 1990. HENCEFORTH, I SHALL REFER TO THE ORIGINAL 531 AS THE SAWBY LOCK MODEL SINCE THE LOCK WAS INVENTED BY IDAHO CUSTOM KNIFE ~1AKERSCOTT SAWBY. SOME OF THESE UNUSUAL KNIVES ARE LISTED FOR SALE IN THE LIST.

There was a recall on this knife as well as the first model Tru-Blue fillet knife. They both had the Sawby lock system. During a demonstration a rep from Buck Knives nearly cut his finger off trying to close the blade on a knife. Knowing that the lock system was dangerous and that others could get hurt, Buck recalled the knives already shipped out to dealers. Anybody that had one at this point wasn't going to turn it in. They saw the $$$ if they held on to it. I once heard that anywhere from 800 to 1200 knives were already shipped and less than 200 came back. I could be wrong, its just rumor...

So, how does the lock on this thing work? Ive never seen one, or heard of it, before.

You unlock it by pushing the metal piece under the blade with your thumb. It turns a kind of a cam inside the knife. See pic.
