On a recent visit to the local mall, I stopped in the knife shop and noticed that they were selling a boxed standard USA 303 cadet for $36 as well as a boxed laminated wood chinese 373 for the same price. The person behind the counter had no information to offer. Other than having a slightly different look to the handle (black stripes between the plys of the wood), how is this different that the Walmart version--or is the owner of the shop just trying to put something over on us?

No difference at all, a 373 is the same at Wal-Mart or any other store.

If the sales person had bothered to look closer, he would have known that besides the handles, the blades are different from the USA to China made knives. Very subtle, but when you look at them side by side, you can see it.

That's what I figured. I didn't take the kid behind the counter to task, but it seems the owner is getting to pocket a bit more on the 373.

I've noticed the Chinese 370 series knives in Gander Mountain stores for about $5.00 more per knife that Wally World, but that's about what Gander Mountain runs on USA Buck knives as well.

But $36.00.....now way!

I had mentioned earlier that they were clearing out a pile pf 373's at one of the local Walmarts. They got as low as $5.00 on the discount rack. They were all gone at that point.

I think it's just shy of shady on the dealer's part. The thing that irks me is that the 303 and the 373 were displayed side by side, among other USA Buck models. If I didn't know that I needed to look for the china stamp on the sheepsfoot blade, I would have assumed at that price that it was a US version (especially if I were to look at the standard delrin version first and notice it is marked USA).

I just saw the 373 at Walmart for $3.00. They still had a pile of them on the clearance rack.

Dang, I gotta head over to Wally... Will buy all of them for that....

Clearance rack...discount aisle...I see these posts but when I ask at my Wally World, they look at me like I had two heads... :grumpy: No discount/clearance place in my local store...

Same here. The Wal Mart here in Sylva is supposedly one of the busiest on the east coast (it's the ONLY place in Sylva to shop for things other than food). So I'd bet that in higher volume stores with a greater loss percentage, there are none of these unsupervised discount racks and whatnot.

I've been back several times in the past few months trying to find the 110 tins to no avail. Either they sold them all (which is possible) or they just took them off the sales floor when the promotion was over and reclaimed the rest.

The only knives at the wal mart here that aren't under glass are the $10 Winchesters and the ocasional Buck Metro.
