Since I got into traditional slip joints about six months ago, the Canoe pattern has really appealed to me. I stayed away from the Buck 389 because I just didn't see the need to pick up a cheap Chinese Buck just for the sake of the pattern. However, it was late one night, I had some extra money, I had just sent back my defective Small Vantage Paperstone and figured what the hell. Why not?
As much as I wanted to not like this knife, I really couldn't do it. The fit and finish was flawless. The thick blades were razor sharp out of the box. While I'm not a fan of the hollow grind the knife has, I must admit that it does it's job very well and the thickness of the blade overall really allows for the grind, without it seeming too thin at any point.
The shield wasn't what it was advertised it would be, and I think the addition of the ® next to the word buck is kind of stupid since it just looks like a circle on the shield. That small detail aside, the knife is really handsome.
The nail nicks are big and well placed, but the pull on the main blade is so smooth that you can just pinch the blades if you need to. The pen blade is also as smooth, but the pull is only slightly stronger.
For about $17, you can't beat this knife. Cheap enough to beat up, give away or lose, but nice enough that I simply can't bring myself to abuse it for no good reason. While I would really love to see a USA stamp on the blade as oppose to China (personal preference that I don't wish to explain or debate), this knife if top notch and I would buy another in a heartbeat.
Here are some quick pics after a bout a month or two of off and on carry and use. I'd love to see other user pics as well!
If I didn't spend all my money on knives, I'd have a better camera.
