buck canoe 389 steel blade

I think it depends on when it was made. The 2008 catalog says it's 420HC, then in 2009 it changes to 420J2.

Plumber, I'm glad someone who knew stepped in to answer . I read it and didn't know .
But the two steels you mention are close in elements . Is this knife he mentions the same one that was offered a year or two back in a Wal-Mart gift tin with another smaller knife ? They both had Mother of Pearl handles . Perhaps they were clam packs and this years were gift tins . DM

I don't know what the OP has. I have 3 wood handled ones from 2008 in clam packs and they say right on the packaging 420HC. The same goes for a two pack of a Toothpick and a Trapper in pearl.

The stag and bone Canoes I have are from 2007 so I assume that they are 420C also. The boxes they came in aren't marked as to the steel type like the clam packs are.

thanks for your help. I thought all imported buck knifes (China) were 420J2 then I saw this canoe with the 420HC mark in this forum and some online store, but buckknives.com says this same pocket knife is 420J2, so I'm confused.

I guess they just decided to change the blade steel for some reason.

We've had this before and the knives of foreign contract don't specifically use steels of American designation they use as close as they can get to the steel Buck uses at their plant . DM
