Buck/Colt 124's

I love that set....truly the holey grail of the 124's IMHO. The Sam Colt 124 show's in your photo it was Handled by LeRoy???

Was this knife reworked....was it damaged; or, did you find an unfinished blade?

during my interviews for my future articals on buck knives
the subject of the colt knives some up...
there were NO extra blades made that any one know of ..
by extra that means unfinished or unmounted blades
it is know that a rep of Colt did give out one or more knives to workers that worked on it.
this was disencuraged by buck supervisers but it did happen...
it was mentioned that tho there were no extras made
that the number made was more then first intended...
ugh ...i can not garenteee the milage you may get from this...
realy i know nothing !!! nothing !!!

It appears that one of the knives has a etch of Sam Colt on the blade rather than the horse. It also looks like the stag is stamped Buck Custom on the front and the other Buck/124/U.S.A. on the back. I have now seen four with the colt etch, but this is the only one that I have seen with Sam Colt etch. Could this be a prototype? It is also not numbered. Aurum would have had to etched the blade. This would not have been an extra since it is not etched the same would it?

From what I know 50 of these were made(Sam Colt)...who has the other 49?
Stag handles were on the other 49....as far as I know.

This is the "only" Sam Colt that I have ever seen....never seen a picture
other than this one.Note it is marked Buck 124 not Custom...and new.
I have examined the box and it was made for the 124.
I have seen percussion Colts with a similar box but no glass top...just wood.
I have seen 4 Buck /Colt logo(Horse) 3 of them Buck collectors the other Colt collector.... 40 total made ?....I have the pictures of these and the sales literature on the BCCI site with the 110.

I looked in the Blade's Guide to Knives under Buck Limited-Edition Knives and it listed that there were only 4 made with the Sam Colt etch and Ivory handles.????

Funny thing Ron and Jerry, #2 never had an edge put on it- ever.
Dan Chesiak, the Head of the Colt Custom Shop, was the original owner of the knife.
Sure looks like your Buck Colts have an edge to them, Jerry and Ron. John, did your knife receive some sharpening?

Outstanding knives, thanks for those pictures. That artwork from the Aurum time period may never be matched.

That is why I was asking.....The LE list on the BCCI site said...Samples for amount made....and the guide book said "4".....if it is 50...well I may have hope yet on finding one.

The one I have is #29 and has an edge!!!!

I have #23 of the horse etch version. I have seen the Sam Colt version with a hidden tang and a mastodon ivory handle by Leroy Remer.
 
# 24 and the Sam Colt have and edge....looks factory to me.
More info to add to the 124 Colts.....how many were left unsharpened ?Thanks David!:thumbup:

John only one source said 50 of the Sam Colts...I do remember reading that there were only 4 then a 5th one, all with mammoth Ivory.

So who has the other 4 and will they be willing to share info ?:D
 
Hi Ron;
I just return emailed Jerry Quinn to tell him the quantity 4 on the Sam Colt version was my number. I did the Excel spreadsheet for the Blade book even though Larry and John were given credit for it. The information was provided to me by Leroy Remer and Vern Taylor. I do not have any knowledge of 40 or 50 being made of this version. The story I have is that 4 were made either for the leaders of the Colt company or were samples that were not approved. As I also understand it the horse version was marketed in violation of the Colt copyright and were recalled. Thus the estimate of 40 of these knives is suspect because we don't know exactly how many were actually made and how many survived the recall assuming there was one. FYI.

My Thanks also Dick. Background information on these and other BUCK KNIVES just makes collecting them more interesting for me and I'm sure others.
