what is the opinion on the buck cpm 154 vs s30v? I have the vantage pro in s30v and i think it's a great knife. Was looking at the dorado from bass pro in cpm 154 and wonder how the blade steels compare?

I have both the Vantage Pro in S30V and the Alpha Dorado in CPM154.

Both are great users. The CPM154 takes a little less time to sharpen, but you can get a great edge on either knife. I have only lightly used both knives, with one exception for the Vantage Pro and the blade held up well, so I cannot do a technical comparison on either knife.

Anyway, these are my most common EDCs together with a 110 S30V w. Sambar stag handle. I recommend all three. :)

I have both in the 110 format but have not tested them side by side. On paper the S30V should have more wear resistance owing to its Vanadium carbides which are 82 on the Rockwell C scale. Since S30V has more wear resistance it should take a little longer to sharpen, but you should get a corresponding longer edge retention. Wear resistance in equals wear resistance out. No free lunch!

Draft, There both great steels and Buck have the heat treat dialed in . I own both steels in 110's . In edge retention alone the S30V has it but I like the 154 CPM better . It cuts alittle different and smoother and is easier to sharpen . Anything beyond these points is personal and thats what most choices are . Use both and decide . DM

Way back in the day myself and a pal were fishing in the middle of nowhere, when he managed to get a huge barbed hook right through his leg.I put a flame to the blade of my 110 and had to cut the damn thing out.Flushed the wound out with some Jack Daniels and sewed it up with a small non barbed hook and some light test line.Sure wish they had 154 CMP back then, that steel can get sharp as a scalpel !
