Buck Creek - what kind of reputation?

Hi!

I've been seeing a number of slippies under the Buck Creek label online. They are reputed to be made in Soligne, Germany.

The ones I've seen have nice traditional lines.

However, what kind of a reputation do they have? And who is really making these knives? How do they compare to the other German brands and/or makers like Hen & Rooster, Eye Brand, Kissing Cranes, or Boker.

Thanks!

John

The ones I have are well made. I think they were hand made by Fred Clouse but I may be mistaken. I would rate them as high as Hen & Rooster. My only resevation is they may be now made by sombody else as I have not bought a new one in years. I have heard that new Kissing Cranes are not made in germany anymore and boker is now made by united.

At one time Buck Creek turned out good quality knives made in Germany.

Today, AFAIK, the company is now owned by Jim Frost, Taylor Brands, and/or someone in the Smoky Mountain Knife Works crowd.
With that pedigree I highly doubt that Buck Creek's quality has improved or even been maintained.

(Note: This is no reflection on SMKW as a merchant - I do think they're excellent in that regard and would not hesitate do purchase from them.)

No, I understand fully what you are saying. I used to work for a knife wholesaler years ago. I remember the stuff we'd get in from Frost, United, and Cherokee (Taylor). It was all style and no substance made in either China or Pakistan.

I've bought a lot of stuff from SMKW and I still wish they offered free shipping on $10 or more orders. (Don't we all!) I guess I'll just have to buy more stuff to get it up to the $100 level.;)

Thanks for the info on Buck Creek. Is there anywhere to find out the lineage of the ownership of the Buck Creek brand? The wholesaler who I worked for had their own line imported from Germany and then sold it out when they ran into financial problems. Buck Creek could have been it for all I know.
