I was in the Gatlinburg, Tn area last week for vacation and made a stop at Smokey Mtn Knifeworks.

I picked up two small "skinner" kits, some dymondwood for handles, and this:

http://www.eknifeworks.com/webapp/e...Mode=Text&SearchText=Whittler&A=&SKU=BC6308BP

I've only had it for a few days, so it's hard to really review it, but I'll try.

Fit and finish is good for a knife of this price. There are no gaps in the backsprings and all blades but one are tight (the loose one is not excessively loose). The blades are reasonably sharp and all have good walk/talk. There are no half stops on this model. The only fit/finish complaints I have is the too deeply set shield (all examples had this "flaw") and the main blade's backsprings not being exactly even. Still, you can't complain for $29.95. The steel is your standard "carbon steel" witha mirror polish. On the main blade, it says "whittler" inside of a snake with "2001" at the end of the snake, and Hand Made underneath.

BTW, I also checked out their stockman pattern knives. The quality of those knives seemed similar to the whittler. All in all, it seems like a good brand for a good price (most were $29.95 or $39.95). Quality seems similar to Scrade or Case. I would buy another.

Thanks for the review. I have been thinking of picking up one of the Buck Creek knives for a while, but was unsure of their quality. I am going to be in the Gatlinburg area around Thanksgiving. My parents retired to that area and I have yet to go to Smokey Mountain Knifeworks. I want to go with enough cash to pick up some stuff. I might pick up one of those.

It's a neat store and they tend to have a lot of slipjoints in stock. I went through a number of Henckels Copperheads to find one with good springs - you might want to do the same with the Buck Creek whittlers (I think the same company makes Buck Creek, Henckels, Hen & Rooster, etc). Just have the salesperson pull out a bunch and then carefully inspect them until you find one you like. :) That's the great thing about buying one in person rathre than online - you get to decide!
