So I have the opportunity to buy a brand new in box Buck Crosslock from a store that has had it in stock for a while (ya, it is NOS at the store), for $40. I know next to nothing about them though.

so, what can everyone tell me on these knives?

when did production end?
what to look for if it could be a special knife (different blade steel, etc)
anything else that you can tell me about these would be awesome

oh, and it is sharp, the guy handing it to me to look at nicked himself on it

The old Buck 180 crosslock's were made from 420HC steel and are very nice knives. Try to get the store to lower the price to about $30, it never hurts to try;). Take a look on the online sites for current values.

With the advent of that model Buck was honoured with a Huge award; the "Knife of the Year" award. I think that was in 2002. So, a lot of people like that model. Plus, many of them were not stamped with the year date on the blade. Instead it was stamped on the liner. DM

As David said, these were year stamped on the on the liner, the stamp is \ for 1994 and was not changed after that! It was not in the catalog until 1995 and the 180 was last seen in the 2003 catalog. The 183 Alpha Crosslock was in the 2004 catalog.

Depending on how "old" the "NOS" is, the OP might be talking about the newer ones. He needs to come back and clarify which model he's looking at.

definitely the middle one in this picture, didn't realize that there was more than one style. If I had to guess, he has had this knife since 2000 or possibly earlier from the way he was talking. I will have to go look at it again tomorrow. oh, and he says it will most likely be there for a good long while, as i was one of the first people to look at it in a while.

Sounds like he is hinting that he is willing to negotiate on the price. My dad always said "no askee no gettee". Good luck.

Blessings,

Omar

Ok, I'm away from my notes and just going by memory so, as usual my date was off. Thanks, DM
