I am looking for a rugged hard use folder. In all likelihood I will never use the knife in this manner, but I would like it to be able to stand up to light prying and possibly light wood splitting. I understand that folding knives are not designed for this task and that I should use a fixed blade instead. I have fixed blades for this task, but the idea of a hard use folder still intrigues me. I would like to spend no more than $130. The two knives that have caught my attention thus far are the Buck CSAR-T and Ontario XM-2
I have been attracted to the Buck because of it's price ( around $90 ), it's thick blade (.175 in) and the interesting looking g-10 handles. I have heard that it is loosely based on the folding alpha hunter, and I don't know if thats a good or bad thing.
I have been attracted to the XM-2 because of it's thicker blade (.19 in) and the titanium liners. However, the liner of the lock looks thinner than it does on the Buck. I am also completely unfamiliar with the steel (N690) and wonder how it would compare to the ATS-34 of the Buck.
I would appreciate any recommendations that y'all have in my price range. It would be very helpful if anyone who ones either of these knives could chime in with their experiences and opinions.
