I recently acquired a LARGE (about 15 1/2" overall) Bowie with a high polish blade and has the tang stamp "BUCK" in script style lettering and Custom. The blade is approximately 3/16" thick.

It has reddish brown diamondwood scales attached with several brass rivets. The sheath is not marked at all with a maker or manufacturer stamp which makes me think it may not be original. It is very thick leather without any provision to use with a belt.

I've seen a similar knife with blade etching making it a commemerative but my knife is just stamped as I described and highly polished.

Anyone know this knife?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Got a pic of the knife to show us? And maybe by my bumping it up to the top here, we'll see a response.

Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of the knife. I did a search of "Images" from Google and found a similar knife on "www.themoosehunter.com" where they have many "Hard to find" Buck knives. The one similar to mine is listed as model M903CS cat # 1205. The difference is the one pictured is Satin finish while mine is highly polished.

Hope this helps.

Peter,
The Bowie that you are describing sounds like the model 903. The handle should be coffin shaped and it should have five rivets. The Bowie had several names; Buck Custom Bowie, Wall Hanging Bowie (it often came with a wooden plaque that would hang on the wall) and Special Bowie.
A mirror polished blade was standard on the 903. A smooth birchwood handle was the stock handle material. The custom shop did put many different handle materials on this knife however.

Hope this helps.
