I was considering a custom 110 from Buck--just such a classic knife, and I love the idea of choosing great materials for it. Can those of you with experience with buying such a knife comment on the overall quality of their finished product. How does it compare in terms of f&f with other production and semi-custom knifes. I would go with the s30v blade too--how's their heat treatment of the steel? Comparable to a spydie's para 2? Thanks...

Its all good, they make a pretty good knife at the custom shop, the steel has a heat treat by one of the best heat treaters out there,Paul Bos.

The fit and finish on the custom shop 110s I've got have all been superb.Their S30V is some of the best around.

from an earlier thread. CSK 110 in ram horn and S30V

The CSK knives are indeed finished better. They are made one at a time by a single craftsman who selects the blade and handle materials for each project. If the fit and finish on a CSK job are not flawless, send it back, and they will correct the problem or they will build it again from scratch. Here is my CSK 110 below. There are a few thread with pics of custom 501's lurking around BF somewhere. The thing to really note is that the lockbar sits true flush with the handle in the open and closed positions on the custom 501's. There is always some unevenness in the factory 501's.

How is the blade lockup? I do not care for blade play in my knives. Thinking of getting a custom 501, and that is why I ask.

I've only bought four from the Custom Shoppe, but they've all been perfect. I have not gotten one for a few years, though.

The main difference is that you will have quality control on the Custom Shoppe 110 and you can choose from a few different materials, some quite unique if you want to pay for the higher priced options.

Regular 110s have no meaningful quality control checks, so there's a chance you might end up sending it back or (quicker and easier) TAKING it back to the store for exchange for another that meets your approval.

All in all, you're gonna get a great knife on the first try with a Custom........usually on the first try with the regular 110.

Heat treat is equal to any and better than most. I say that not because I've tried them all, but just from long study of internet comments on many forums and sources.

You really can't go wrong with Buck when you consider the price.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm thinking of the jigged buffalo horn, s30v, and nickle bolsters... But not sure yet.

I have a CS 110 with royal indigo wood scales and s30v blade.
It's a beautiful knife with a perfectly ground edge and solid lockup.
It is slightly off-center when closed, but not enough to complain about.
The optional leather sheath for $5 is an incredible value as well.

Hers's 2 Ram CS 110s that my son and his wife gave me for xmas (last two years)... N/S, S30V Blades and pins...

You gotta at least try that s-30v BG-42 EDGE LOL...CAMON' TRY IT!YOU KNOW U WANT TO!

LOL!

Well.........actually, I don't.

The only S30V I own is on four Folding Kalinga Pros that I got a while back when they were discontinued. I wish they were a better steel, but I'll hang onto them as their value is rising dramatically.

Besides not being fond of S30V......I hear Buck is sometimes engraving the 110 stamp on the blades these days.

I couldn't stand to have a Buck without a tang stamp (or with engraved tang "stamp") in my house.

So......the times are changing and I am not.

That's just the way it is.

:)

Wow, those look very, very nice. They have the rugged, ol'West look that I am very fond of. As for s30v, I have had nothing but good luck with it; but, my experience has been with Spyderco's s30v. I have both the military and the paramilitary 2, and both cut like a laser. After regular use, they sharpen up fairly easily and can shave hair off my arm effortlessly. As for the custom Bucks, I am liking the handle grooves more and more.

I just ordered the 501 from the custom shop in S30V, after reading all of this. If they start doing the 112, I may place another order. I already have a 110 in the less expensive steel. It doesn't get much use, but if I wind up doing any fishing down the road, I may want one in S30V.

I have had super luck with all custom shop 110's that i have.No blade play, perfect lock up,just what i expect .I don't necessarily like other brand knives withs30v,I have had som e chip out,Buck does not .I have used it very hard and still find it hard to beat .Any custom you get from buck will be great .

JK, thanks for the pick of the indigo--quite regal, my son would love that. Most heart-felt best wishes for recovery for your granddaughter.
