A recently acquired Custom shop knife has the initials BM stamped on the choil.
Does anyone know who those initials belong to?
Could Byron "Mac" McKinney have used BM as well as MM?

There was a previous thread on this subject, but the initials BM are not listed.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...w-who-they-are?highlight=buck+custom+initials

The Buck Custom Knives most of the time have the makers initials stamped into them. Some of them I know who they are and some I do not. Below is a list of the initials I know of and the names of the ones that I know. Does anyone know who the others are??
WBC - Wild Bill Cody
JK - I have been told is John Knapp. Please correct me if this is wrong.
LR - Leroy Remer
JY - Juan Yuriart
DD - Dean Davidson
JL - Jeff Legerton
MM - Byron "Mac" McKinney
Also if there are any others please let me know.

Well let's see the rest of your knife! jb4570

I knew someone would pop up with that. I'm still savoring it myself for now. It will appear some future Sunday. That horrible patina needs polished first...... :)

DeSky,

Send an email to Heath Stone & Leroy asking your question. Leroy will know the answer, but he is to busy to swim here with us.

Do they still do this and do they ever stamp custom 110s?

No sure how to answer this one correctly so if anyone wants to add, please do. In the 1980's Buck operated a true custom shop where special knives were made to order. The artisen would sometimes stamp their initials on the knife, that is what is being discussed here. There was a separate custom shop catalog showing all the special blade patterns and handle options available. In addition to special blade patterns, standard knives could be ordered with non standard handle materials, not unlike the offerings today. What is labeled as a "Custom" knife today is either a limited edition, produced in quantities of say 100 to 1,000, or a standard knife such as a 110 where you could specify a handle material and blade taken from a fixed list of options and it was then then assembled specifically for you. These really are not "Custom" knives in the same sense as the knives made in the 1980's custom shop. I've not ordered a current "custom" 110 directly from Buck but I believe they come with a little certificate signed by the person who assembled it.

Either a little birdie tattled or you have an uncanny eye for details and circumstance ..... :D

All the Birds are still south, The BM was barley visible in the Auction, but I confirmed it with the seller when it was first listed, and the timing of that selling in relation to your post, my Uncanny eye put it together. It was only a matter of time before I was going to pull the trigger, but things happen for a reason and I am sure the Bear Claw is where it belongs. Looking forward to the Polished Pics!!

Your explanation of the Old Custom shop seems to be about right, but I am like you and do not order new Custom 110's, 501's, etc.., but I would order a few Customs if the options still included 903's, Mountain Mans,951's, 953's, etc....in Mammoth Ivory!

Not sure of who the maker is unless Byron McKinney used that mark as well but based on what you are showing on that knife it is one that a real man would take with him when he goes up in the mountains.

OK, I took your advice. Here is the response....

Roger,
Mac never stamped any knives with his initials and the BM stands for Bob Miller.
Take care, Leroy

He did not say but we are now left with the question as to who MM is if not Byron "Mac" McKinney.

Great research Roger. Mystery solved.

MM may still be Byron "Mac" Mckinney. He may be on the list just as someone who made knives in the custom shop however he never stamped his initials on any knives.

At least that is the only thing that makes since to me.

Richard Matheny has him down as one of the custom shop makers with the initials MM as well.

I guess we now have someone else to add to the list.

I know of 2 Buck 119's that are customs by Byron "Mac" McKinney but I have not personally seen them so I cannot verify if they are stamped with his makers mark or not.
