Fathers day is on June 20th and I am scared I have cut it too close. they say 4-6 weeks for delivery but FD is 6.5 weeks away. In you guys experience can I count on that 6 week max?

Is the fit and finish better than on the Wal-Mart Bucks?

What is your suggestion on rivets? I was thinking no rivets to make it hit home that this is a custom knife but I plan to go with either Oak or Walnut handle so nothing fancy and as this is a gift I have no idea if he might actually prefer rivets. What do the traditionalists here like?

Main questions are quality compared to WalMart and time to get it in my hands if I order today.

Thanks!

It's really hard to find fault with any of the Buck 110's that I own and that's a large number. The custom shop knives are very nice but so are the many Limited Editions out there. I have several from the custom shop and also many LE's and I'd have a hard time telling them apart quality wise. Pretty much the same for the production line knives. That's not a knock on the custom shop knives, but a great testament for Bucks overall quality.

Rivets/no rivets? I like 'em both ways so I think it's more a matter of what you like. I don't know about the time frame to get one. You might call and ask what the work load is right now. I just put in an order for two on Monday, but I have no idea when they will be done.

By the way, one I ordered with rivets, the other without.;)

 Fit and finish is usually exceptional! Custom shop knives to me, just mean that they can be ordered with different steels and handle materials, how you want them.

As far as to rivet or not to rivet..... I have one of each also. Choose what you think looks good! I am sure he will love it either way! I know I would!

When I placed my orders 2 years ago :(... :D The first one took 6 weeks, the other was just over 2 weeks. I think you will be O.K.!

Please post pics when you get it!!!

the LE's many times have the rocker pivot showing
the Customs do not..
i would suggest with Stag, Elk, Ram and
Buffalo to have rivets
with fancy wood like iron wood and Koa also rivets look good but
with the other materials with out ...
pua and plain wood no rivets

now IMHO the best bargain for handle material is ram horn!

Fred, Welcome . I agree with Plumber . The custom shop 110's and Limited Editions are a cut above the Wal-Mart knives . Like Postfalls said, the fit and finish is just great . Hope your Dad likes it . Good son for getting him one . I've given my step dad several nice Buck knives and a LE . He still talks about them and shows them around to his buddies at the coffee shop . DM

Gee David, I wish you were my stepson! Of course you would need red hair! Great gift for dear old dad!

I believe that they are a cut above production knives only in that you get to choose (within pretty narrow limits) your type of blade, bolsters and handle material, etc., not that they are going to be superior in the fit and finish.

I can put one of my custom shop knives with wood handles and standard blade along side the production knife and seriously, I can't see a difference in the fit or finish. Nothing that just really jumps out and says "wow, this is done alot better".

That's not to say they (customs) aren't nice, just that Buck has such a good handle on producing the standard 110 by now that they are really difficult to fault.:D

LOL! My join date is 3 years older than yours.

Thanks for all the answers guys. I would get a fancy scale material but this will be used all the time and am scared it will break.

So what was funny about the welcome by David? With a total of 7 posts since you joined and only those in this thread in the Buck forum, you can understand the "welcome" to a new poster.

I find it humorous to welcome someone who has been around for five years. Anyways, thanks again.

Man of few words Fred. Let me say welcome back:D I dont think you have to worry about the durability of CS handle materials, they carry the same 4 ever warranty that any other Buck carries. Might be a shame to scratch a premium scale or might be a badge of honor-depends on perspective I guess.

Not many posts and I hadn't seen you here hence, the welcome . Mmmm ...
I wouldn't state just on appearance . As I actually joined this blade forum back in early 1999 and had several hundred posts in the knife makers and maintenance forums . Then moved and in the process lost all my password info. so had to start all over . Some here can verify this . I was just attempting to be friendly . This group of guys are like that . DM
