My brother asked me a pretty good question today, "When did Buck start up the Custom Shop"? I said I didn't know, but I'd ask. Seems like a good thing to know with all the knive's that come outa there. :)

Hi Juggler,

You need to refine your question a little. Buck had a full "Custom Shop" for a few years that made knives to order....anything you wanted made. Then there is the current "Custom Shoppe" 110's and 194/193's. Before I go look up the data.....let me know what you’re interested in? ;)

1981 was the start of Buck Custom Shop where you could order up a custom blade and handle, they are stamped in the brass ,stainless steel or brass with the makers initials ,such as BM,LR etc.......but .... you could order stag ,ivory on just about any Buck Knife prior to 1984,including blade length on fixed blade production models.

Several Custom fixed blade one offs were made in the mid 40's 50's and 60's.
Usually marked with BUCK horizontally on the right side of the blade,
in front of the tang.

The new "Buck Custom Shoppe" is producing quite a few models and styles
and one offs....you will have a several months to year + wait on these.
You can order a 110 or 193 in several configurations now....about a four week + or -waiting period .

Yeah, and the 110s and 193s are obviously being made in several variations all the time like the hamburgers at MacDonald's.

Looks to me like the only thing "Custom" about them is that you can have your name engraved on them.

However, a recent e-mail tells me they may open up to real custom orders in the fall.

We can only hope.

I suspect that it's extremely hard to do that at a price anyone but the very rich can afford......and, of course, Buck would like to do it at reasonable prices.

That's the dilemma.

I would love to see them open a Custom Shop that allows for more than the current situation!

Hope they give it a try. I think it would be a good move since it's not a common thing these days and might bring in even more "converts".

I would pay for something to be the way I really wanted it. I'm waiting 5 years for a Randall so a year and a fair price would be fine with me.

Thanks guys. Interesting history! I had no idea Buck was making custom fixed blades that far back. I don't think I've seen any "vintage" Buck Custom Shop knives on the auction block yet. Or maybe I have and didin't know what I was looking at! :)

Lot's to learn! Again, thanks for the info! :)

there are a lot of bucks that have not the name on them !
many of the early 110 the etch name came off thus looking like a knock off
a little bird told me that some of the early pre 61 knives have had the handle 'slip' or move some how and some of them dont show the buck name ...
there are reports of 110's with no name on them from the 70 and 80's
and some thought they were govt ordered knifes for spe ops.. bu that is rummer ... i think it is one of those things that if they tell you they have to kill you thingy so i dont want to kow!
many sales man samples were un marked or were stamped so light as to be hard to see
Nothing at Buck goes un used if it is usable
makes collecting ... shall we say chalagening

I have a "real" custom buck that was made in 1986. I sent in a drawing of what I wanted type of steel and type of handle material. They sent me back a quote and then after agreement made the knife to order. An original letter from the president of Buck was included identifying the knife being custom and features. It was stamped buck custom 1 of 1 with the makers three initials stamped in the tang.
