I did a search on damascus here in the Buck forum and found that there was some question as to what the damscus was that Buck had used in the past. Was there ever any resolution to the damascus mystery? Does anyone know what damascus Buck is using presently?

The reason I ask is because I just ordered a Pete`s Custom Shop 110 with a damascus blade. I`d like to be able to actually use this knife and just wanted to get a little more info on the blade steel.

Thanks in advance.

Steve,

The Damascus material used in PCKS is obtained from Daryl Meier. It is a high-carbon Damascus (1095/1020), and is Bos Treated right here at Buck.

We ordered this material in a size that would allow us to fineblank raw parts. However, due to the pressures and stresses that fineblanking puts on material, we decided to LASER cut the Designer's Choice blades. After the LASER process, we anneal to relieve any heat-affected zones (now done on all production blades), and then machine the blades in the soft condition.

On finished blades, measuring the hardness is somewhat of an art. We take a small sampling of blades, and Rockwell test enough points on each one until we believe we have obtained the highest reading. The high-carbon regions should reach 58-59 Rc.

In general - Damascus versus Cutlery Stainless steels: Damascus will rust and is not as strong. On the other hand, Damascus will bend before it breaks, will hold an edge better than many steels, is easier to sharpen, and looks a whole lot better than stainless.

Of course, this is for comparison only, your mileage may vary.

Pete,
what is the black coating on the damascus blades? Also as it wears off will the pattern in the steel be more obvious? Thanks for the above info, I was curious too.
Cheers
John
