What is this stuff like? It's beautiful. No doubt about that it. But how does it perform? How does it compare to ATS-34, VG-10, etc?

I don't know Bunny,

I don't have a Buck knife with a DM blade. I hear it still cuts well even if the blade is some what dull as the DM is like a tiny saw on the edge of the blade.
Someone will come along and give you the info.

There is a thread here somewhere (I know, I'm a big freakin' help!) that states which two stainless alloys are used for the Damascus blade that Buck offers, and from that you can get an idea of how it would stack up against the straight alloys... :)

OK I'll give it a go.The damascus Buck used in earlier knives is a little high maintanence, but still comparable to some super steels of today.

It takes a edge very easily, and with minimal touch ups stays sharp a long, long time.

I find it rusts easily if not cared for properly(drying the blades after each use)
but its high carbon content makes for easy sharpening(harder stainless steels require a bit more work to sharpen)

The damascus also gives you a micro serrated edge, effectivly cutting things like rope well after it should have been re-touched.I read somewhere that Darryl Meir was SUPPLIER,As well as Devin Thomas, but i'm not sure for a fact.

Ya ever wonder why ya didn't do something when ya had the chance?
Thinking if I'd known the the Buck Damascus I just got was a run of only 50 Stainless Damascus...well, I should have gotten two. One to do things with.

I have another Damascus folder. I think it's made by Wienerschmell or Wienerschnitzel...can't remember...maybe I should play with that. I have been nothing but curious to know how they hold out.

Snooze, ya lose. :(

Does anyone know if Buck will bring Damascus back? If so, when? I haven't even cut anything with my new ATS-34/Nickle/Sambar 110 yet but I feel planning ahead is prudent.

I have a 110DM that I bought back when it was new so I have had it for 15 years or so. I think everything that has been said so far is true. It’ll still cut when it shouldn’t and it is real easy to sharpen but I think the most significant thing about it is how sharp you can get it. Even before I really had taught myself to sharpen knives to the standard I expect today I could get that knife hair poppin’. It was just easy to get a really good edge on that knife, not just sharp but nutso sharp.

Hey Will...
Can you post a pic of that user? I would love to see it :) Curious about the blade wear.
THANKS!

I wish i could do pics,we have dial up,and it sucks! My user is pretty plain from the custom shoppe ,it has brass bolsters and oak scales with rivets,on a side note, the blade is marked 110x nothing else.I have used it a lot without much blade wear, usually all i sharpen it with is a fine diamond hone and leather strop loaded with metal polish, this will put a edge on DM,that pops hairs off your arm .

RB...I'll be glad to do pic's for you. Just pack that 110 up and send her to me..I'll do some of those classy photo's of your pride and joy having a good time ;).

You guys must be the richest people on earth. I can't imagine paying what you have to pay for a Buck Damascus blade knife then actually use it to cut something!
As far as bringing Damascus back, I think it is a matter of price and availability. I know the demand is there but the last time I heard Damascus had been priced out of the market.

darryl meier of Meiersteel.com is what buck used one time most was parker
devin i am not sure of
buck did not track what they used the meiersteel dm for
dm cuts leather like ... well you could slice your self off a 10 minnet sunrise from a year of a condo rental
adn it dont hurt as much if you cut your self
wax is a good thing to put on it if you use it every day...

I'm looking for a user.
As for "richest" peeps. No. I have car registration a tad past due, a busted up fender on my scooter, and am eating a bologny sandwich as I type this.
It's all about being addicted and being good at whatcha do ;)

yea man... choices....
i have seen gold plated knives being used!
it was eplained to me this way
you ware that NicE watch and
drive that NicE car
and ware a gold weding band
all not esental to life
i like the knife
so i use it
well i had a 110 with real ivory inlay and schrimshaw on it
i used it every day!
and it got stolen
that is the only thing i have resverations
about on useing a non cheep knife

oh yes last i heard it was a quanity with quality issuw
not enught of the good enught stuff were they can buy it in amounts they need!
esixting stock used for warrenty work only it what i think is going on if you ask me
but that is jest M H Onion

well i learned some thing the other day
i was looking up sword infomation
and found that a LOT of high dollor early cutting
devices were damascus steel
that was reconsised then as being a better
cutting and stronger steel for a lot of sliceing/cutting use
only that it was NOT ACID diped to bring out the layers!!!
so a lot of the old expensive steel may be
"forged welded" of differing types of steel and no one knows
true damascus or wooose steel is scearce and gets its lines from
an differing steel makeing process
still it is all better cutting
so maybe some one has it and dont know it!

I have been using the 1989 110DM I got from Harry for a few weeks now as my EDC du jour.
What a great steel. All the attributes mentioned by 'Blades are spot on.
I have found that the best way to keep the blade coated in order to prevent rust is to slice some good ol' salami with it a couple of times a week. The oil (read as "FAT") does the trick. Just wipe the excess off with a paper towel and enjoy.
Just my little "Hints From Heloise"...
