I would not be posting sights which show prices on this Forum as it's against forum rules.
About the knives: it is confusing. The 485 Select has 420 steel. The other model 487 Avid has Sanvik steel.
I got the 495 new and liked it. Upon seeing it my youngest confiscated it. She uses it and took it on a 3 day
wilderness canoe trip we did. It performed well for her doing many activities. Including opening cans of beans, whittling, rope cutting, slicing fruit, ect..
All without a hitch. It feels good in the hand and the cordura sheath has a liner offering good protection. Your call. DM

The above model has S30V steel. A higher level steel. Thus, three levels, 3 different prices. DM

Ok, of these: there is the 495, one with a gut-hook and one without (the Skinner) That's two.
Then the 497 'Avid' which has different steel, Sandvik. That's three.
Then the 498 ErgoHunter -- 'Pro". Which has another step up in steel. Which makes four. These will reflect 4 DIFFERENT prices.
I hope this helps. DM

I am not sure if you get what I am trying to convey.
If you look up Amazon you will see buck 485 ergo hunter cs select for 29 dollars
then there is the buck ergo hunter select for 49 dollar both are the same and both have have steel. why the price difference?
in the end is the buck 485 worth getting.

The Buck 497 has Sandvik steel (a good steel many of us like) but I am not certain which Sandvik (13C26?). The 487 CS also has Sandvik 12C27 with a 1/4" shorter blade. The 485 CS Select has the same blade length as the 487 but has the cheaper 420HC steel, so the knife is less expensive. Of course the Pro has the superior S30V steel and so is the most expensive. Other than that, it is all about handle inserts (colors or wood) and blade lengths (various).

For a lower end steel I feel that the Sandvik 12C27 Mod, 13C26, and 14C28N are top notch steels. They are easy to sharpen and hold a good edge. I much prefer any of these to 420HC as they hold an edge better but are just as easy to maintain. The S30V is a great steel and will hold a working edge for a long, long time (think 4 deer). But this comes with the price of being harder to sharpen and more expense.

I went there and noticed the 485 for 22$ and the 487 for 29$. Yes others knives are offered at different prices from different sellers. Yes, it's worth getting and that is cheap. DM
