Has this model been changed or discontinued? And if so, when was it last made? I always thought this model had a Kraton handle instead the standard phenolic.

The bar code on the bottom of the box is marked: "Model 0639-BK-0" and "Required For Redemption".

Yes, it has been discontinued. Yours is a 1994 model. I don't know when it was discontinued.

i had one
nice knife
did not use it so ...
looked like a small 184 to me...
had one of thoes also
sold both..

As near as I can tell, this was a variation of the Kraton-handled 639 that was made in 1993. I thought it was made in only 1993, but this is obviously a 1994 knife. Was it maybe a warranty replacement for one of the 1993 knives?

tvranesic, how did you obtain your 639? I really want to find one and need some tips.

This knife is a 639-B2....
This was the left over blades from the fieldmates that were discontinued early 90's. BUCK Knives doesnt like to waste anything;) ,so they made this and they also made a 639-B1 with not only the scallops BUT the sawback. Hope this helps. One nice rarer knife.... I have a small collection of the 639-B1 as I like the BuckMaster look and function. A small by the way here. The 639 sawback functions alot better than the 184 for cutting wood.. There was a great article written in the 80's about this knife. Hope this helps...

It helps a bunch. Thanks a whole lot!

I found an old thread from 2002 with a post from Joe Houser who stated the following in response to a question about this model:

"It is obvious that the knife is a model 639B2, catalogue number 8079. We made a special run of 315 of them in 1993, but i thought everyone knew that? MSRP was $72.00
We took the 119 Special, with a 639 blade, minus the broached saw teeth along the backbone, and bead blasted the whole unit. A very unique version of the Fieldmate/Special.
Hope this helps!"

However, that says 1993 and that they were numbered, which doesn't explain my 1994 knife.

There's one on eBay now with 6 days left. Item no.320481528950

The regular 639 with the rubber handle does'nt really do that much for me, but the ones with the 119/120 handle get me excited.
