I remember seeing something in a prior thread about a Buck fixed blade with a notch cutout in the base of the blade and low and behold I just found a picture of 1 that is coming up for auction at a small farm type auction in my area. I am not sure which model it is, either a 105 or a 121? The picture was pretty small so when I blew it up it got pretty fuzzy. Is this cutout notch from the factory or something someone did after the original purchase. Funny that another one popped up with the same notch. Any information would be great.

Yes there are blades designed with a notch for a finger at the base of the blade that allow for a choked up hold. In this particular case it is a damaged blade, the chip being out of the sharpened part of the blade itself. It is like a stress fracture and everyone I've seen starts right at the juncture of the choil and blade in an arc so perfect you would think it was deliberate. Talking with a seller at a gun show last year about Vanguards, he related that cleaning a deer his blade hit the pelvic bone & he heard a "ping" and a perfect semicircular piece of the blade had broken out in just the same location. Mostly I have seen Kalingas & Vanguards. Here are two pictures of knives showing the same blade damage.

That's not always correct. The more correct answer is that the Fixed blade knives that came out of the factory are all hand finished and some of the earlier models were all hand worked. This being said not every knife was finished the same way because different people finished them. Some of the workers like to add personnel touches to the knives they worked. The knife below is such a knife and did come out of the factory with the modification. All things are possible with Buck knives

That is very nice Matt! But, the work on your photo is not the same as the photo's of the three knives above, not by a long shot IMHO. The chip or modification is way past the knives factory tang and in that fact are way different than your 103. I was at a gun show a few years ago and found a pair of old Kalinga's, when I pulled them out of their sheaths they had the chip/modification that you see in De's photo. I pointed this out to the seller and he said those were both custom finger holds and worth more as a result! I told him that who ever cut out 1/3 of the blade weakened it and made it worthless to me;).

I have been watching what I think is a bantam with a chunk out of the blade like shown, but the seller still has it marked at new plus 10%. maybe next week. He purchased it thinking it as a factory job.

Here is a small Buck knife specifically designed with a forward finger notch. What this knife and Matt's have in common is that the finger notch is part of the choil, not forward of the choil in the blade. Definately meant for small hands, the 477 Caping knife is lost in my big paws. The Caping Knife has a blade shape that lets you hold it in a choked up position and feels like you would have a lot of control. I like the feel of how the Caping knife holds but the gut hook gives the knife a very unappealing proportion. One of these would make a great youth knife.

My point is not to argue, its however that although the knives in the picture are most likely aftermarket Mods, you can never discount some of the strange works that have a weird way of making it out of the factory.

But arguing is fun...... lets agree to disagree Matt. My opinion is that the examples I have shown and the knife in the OP's picture are fractured blades. /Roger

The knives shown are not factory. Ebayers will always find someone to say that these chipped Bucks are "custom" when in fact they are chipped and damaged.
