So this is my first post, here goes.

I am looking at 2 knives for hunting/ field dressing/ skinning

the Buck gen 5 (not the rosewood one) or the Boker arbolito, stag handle 4 1/4" blade

The boker is 440a and the buck is 420hc steel....

Some input from someone who either has one or both of these knives or has used them would be great.

440 a is not that good imho,440 c is good.I would go with the gen 5,i got 2 and field tested one on a roadkill buck, let me tell you its awesome .The grip is perfect ,and 420 hc was hard to beat,it was like a bg-42 blade ,it lasted a long time before its first touch up

Welcome to the forum Rev. I don't own either model but I agree with Razor that 420HC is a notch above 440a.

My use is as a 'woods walker' - or 'bushcraft-lite'. The 005 GYS is a great little knife - and the 420HC blade came hair-popping sharp - and is still there, after using it in the shop, yard, and as a package opener/EDC since Feb. I also have the rosewood/brass/154CM bladed 005 RWS. That nylon horizontal mount (Velvro straps.) sheath of the 005GYS is more serviceable in the field, while the 154CM blade will no doubt be marginally better, I know how to resharpen the 420HC easily (Spyderco 'Sharpmaker'.). Gotta admit, the rosewood & brass looks nice - I just don't like the feel of the knurled grip of the 005RWS. The 005GYS is the bargain there. I have never even seen the Boker.

For field dressing I prefer a 4" blade. Style and shape I'll concede. But 154CM steel will cut a lot more, like over double. DM
