In 1985, I got a Buck General Model 120.
For the last 14 years, I have used the knife
on lots of hunting, fishing and camping trips
The blade still looks great. Can you tell me
what kind of steel was used in making it ?
I assume it is stainless steel.
Also - what is the handle made of ?
It has worked hard and lasted very well.
Thanks

I belive the General's blade was 425M or 420HC. The handles are a phenolic resin.

In 1985 the General, Model #120 would be with a blade of 425 Modified (425M) steel.

This steel was able to get a 58 RC hardness will a lot less carbon improving the rust resistance of the blade.

How do you usually use your knife??

Hi CJ
In answer to your question - for over a decade I have usually used the General
very hard. Kind of like my lever action
Savage 99 ... when I go hunting, I figure
on the rifle and knife to get some hard use.
Would never use it in a foolhardy way but
I never baby it either.

I have been reading the 5th edition of the
Gun Digest Book of Knives. Part of Chapter 18
is about the history of Buck Knives. In the
first paragraph they write about CJ Buck ...
great grandson of Hoyt. Is that you ?
Its a great chapter and the whole book is
good reading.
