Good day all

Was walking through the local gun show yesterday, looking for knives as I usuallly do. I came across this buck 619 on this guys table. He had a $5.00 price sticker on it. I snatched it up, flipped him a five and disapepared into the crowd before he could change his mind.

I read some previous posts here and learned that they were produced in the mid 80's, and that there were about 4500 of these (black handle) ones produced. Kinda surprised that they didn't sell well.

This one is in excellent condition, it does not appear to have been used, sharpened or carried. The sheath has some small stains, but for a 25 year old knife, I'm very suprized by its condition. I bought it to keep on my boat, but now I am wondering it I shouldn't just set it aside.

The tang stamp reads:
Buck
619V
U.S.A.
Can anyone tell me what the "V" stands for, and what one of these might sell for today, yea, I kinda figure I got a good deal at $5.00.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Cosmo,
V is a date code reperesenting 1989, this best way to find out what a real price tag could be on your knife is go to an auction site and see what the auctions closing price was. this will show you what others are paying for them. I'm sure you will see you did well.

I wouldn't presume to tell you what use to put it to, but you just walked out of there with a steal! If it had been at any of the show's I've been too, he would have had a $200 price tag on it. That's the way they think around here.

It doesn't look like an original Buck sheath but what the heck, you can easily come up with one if it's important to you.

V is the date code. (1989)

I believe that is the sheath those came with Dave! And I would say $5.00 is a great deal. If you check online, they usually go for around $80(ish)

Thanks for the pics!

:foot: I stand corrected! Thanks Jim, it just didn't look like any Buck sheath I'd ever seen.:o No Buck on the snap and nothing on the front of the sheath. It actually shows that very one in the catalog along with a camo version.

Yes Sir! The camo sheath goes with the green handled version. The even have a little nylon tag sewn on the back of the sheath with the american flag and made in usa on it :D I always wondered why Buck chose that sheath to go with them, but I guess it worked.

Very nice score.

That one is in real nice shape. You just happened along at the right time, because that wouldn't have lasted long at that price.

I don't know why Buck ever sold a knife with a sheath like that. Some were better. I have one like this and it's a bit better made.

These are quite popular because a lot of people like that Kraton handle. As has been said, you see them going for around $80 on the Bay and sometimes lower if you're lucky.

It's a fine knife and at the price you got it......you can invest in a nice sheath for it. The Buck Custom 119 sheathes on the Bay are reasonable and well-made.

Just a thought on why you got the bargain.

The seller may have picked it up on a trade, and.....not knowing much about knives and having a lot of stuff to take to the gun show and being quite busy--may never have looked at the knife.

He may have been totally unfamiliar with Kraton handles and just gone by the unfamiliar handle and really CRAPPY-LOOKING sheath and never realized that the knife inside the sheath was a good one.

So he just quickly threw it on his table with $5 on it. Your gain.

Guess a cheap sheath can give a happy outcome now and then.

Yes, that series was offered w/ two sheaths--nylon and cordura . I've seen both . Around my area those knives are hard to find . DM

Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll try to clean the sheath up and put it aside. I do have a Mora, perhaps I'll put that on the boat.

Can't wait for the next gun show!!

Nice Grab!!

There is one listed on local craigslist right now for $30.

Debating....lol...

Hey guys,

Now after reading your posts I have to replace the sheath, thanks for the idea. I looked on E-bay, what other buck models have a sheath that this knife will fit in? I want to make shure I get a proper fitting sheath.

Thanks

Easiest thing would be to go to the Buck website linked at the top of the page here.

There you can get a top-quality black leather 119 sheath that will fit perfectly.

You can get it for $16 or $6.40 if you are a BCCI (Buck Collectors Club) life member (this might be a good time to check into joining as you can readily see that such big discounts (it works for knives, too) over a few years will put you way ahead of the membership cost).

Otherwise, there's always a good selection of 119 sheaths of many kinds on the Bay.

Good luck.

That's exactly like my 619 I got new in 1987, even the sheath looks the same. Nice 440C steel too. I prefer my 119's phanolic handle but it makes a great collector piece. Quite a score!

Hey BG42Edge,

I like the sheath shown in your post above. Would that one be the "650/655 nighthawk" (0650-15 BK) I saw on the Buck website?

David

No, Buck apparently sells only the leather sheath for the 119/619. That's all I see there.

I don't have a Nighthawk, so I don't know if a Nighthawk sheath would fit a 619......I doubt it, blade shape is quite different.

Somebody who has one will chime in, I'm sure.

:)
