I just received a new Buck Hilo yesterday. I am very impressed with the value of this new knife.

The blade grinds are perfect, fit and finish are outstanding, and it locks up solid. The handle is much thinner than I expected.

The only problem was some residue on the handles by the spacers screws that appears to be adhesive that squeezed out. This was easily cleaned up with some acetone. In fact, I cleaned both scales with acetone and it really brightens up the material.

It feels great in the hand and the recurve blade is perfect.

Summary: It is not a custom Mayo, but it is a lot more knife for your money than anything that I have come across in years. I am very impressed with my new Buck. I have the first Buck Mayo with the titanium and S30V and I have several Mayo customs and this one is consistent with the quality of those. In fact, the fit and finish is better on the new one than it was on my first Buck Mayo when I received it.

:D :D :D :D :D

I just came home with a Buck Hilo myself. Outstanding knife for the money. Buck's website says the blade is 440C. If so, this has got to be the best bang for the buck folder ever!

Can anyone post a comparison of the Buck Hilo vs BM Monochrome? I'm torn....

Yeah, I would like to see that also, first impressions from pictures are that the HILO is "beefier" than the monochrome but how about fit and finish?

My Hilo is a good little knife. Can't beat it for the price and I don't have any concern with using it as an EDC.

Went to loosen the pivot torx but when I turn it, it just spins. Thinking I'd have to take the clip off to hold the opposite end of the pivot in order to loosen it up.

Problem is that I can't find any torx wrenches small enuf to get the three torx heads off the clip.

Anyone know where I can order a set of Mini-Me (small) torx wrenches?

Thanks,
Goose.

...Hey gooser...try this...It gets down pretty "teenie"...
I deleted the url...It didn't werk any hooo...

.aww heck...that just gets ya to Homedepot's site...Type in TORX and they have a set for about 6 "bucks" for precision work...Really "teenie" sizes...LOL...Their catalog number is..Catalog # 100087664

Thanks D6O and Darryl...

Got one of those kits. One I got made by "General".
Used a T7 on the clip and T9 on the pivot.
Perfect.

I have been watching for a 179 HILO. Have the 174 which is just a little shorter. A tad short for my liking. The blade loosened up a tad on the 174 (Cutback) and I tightened it with a teenie tiniee meteric hex. Knew it wasn't a correct fit, but it tightened just enough to take out the side to side blade play..
