I have been buying vintage Buck Honemaster's No. 136: Some are brown cases an some I guess are maroon deep red? I was wondering does anyone have any idea when they changed the colours of the boxes [years] an what was the standard literature/instructions that came along with them? I have some with one piece of litterature and another with 2 pieces one a folded pamphlet and another ochre coloured maybe from age that is more like a longated card.

I have two with all the paperwork. Both are the maroon box with clear lid. I've not seen the brown case. The papers may be dated. The Honemaster itself carries the wording 'Patent Pending' (mid 70's) or 'Patent number 134256' ex.. I believe the patent for this was awarded in 1979. However, one may look it up in the U.S. Patent Office web-site and find the information. Go to the site and plug in the number. DM

Thank you so much D.M. I'm gonna file that info for sure! I just sold 1 brown case one on E-BAY & after hearing you about never seeing the brown cases? maybe I better take down the other brown one I just put up for sale...LOL I have 2 others that are that are maroon and put one of them up for sale instead.

So when you say David you have all the PAPER WORK you mean the folded pamphlet & the small ticket sized piece too....2 in all?

Now thats funny...the 2 maroon ones don't have any Pat. No. yet the brown one does? LOL I tried the patent office...I need to go back to school...LOL

So, you did find out how to use the site. Here's the link. http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html
It's good you posted this. I have posted this before but sometimes items in BladeForums can be hard to find.
Are you just getting information here so you can sell stuff and sound informed?
I'll have to get mine out and look at the paper work. If the 136 doesn't have any numbers on it then it should have the wording 'Patent Pending' per my earlier post. DM

Yes David I remembered after I posted you said that about plain "patent pend" or numbered....thank you so much! for the help. Yes it great have all the info you can gather up deciphering it is another story. LOL thanks for that link too! have a great day!

You should become a Buck Collector member. As this will open for you more doors of higher learning. Plus, if your interested in information toward selling Buck knives collectors like purchasing from other collectors. DM

It sounds like a plan to me David, duly noted......and thank you for steering me in the right direction too! much appreciated!

Clarifying, NOTE: If the Honemaster reads BUCK HONEMASTER NO.136 Pat. No. 3924360 is later than the Honemaster that just has
PAT PENDING
BUCK HONEMASTER
Is earlier because the Patent was number was not given yet.

Colours: My brown cases only have PAT PENDING BUCK HONEMASTER earlier. The Marroon/Red case has Pat Number later....reads like this. BUCK HONEMASTER NO.136 Pat. No. 3924360

Yes, if a Hone Master reads patent pending. That is the earlier model. My cases are maroon and one has patent pending and another has the patent number. I encounter gents looking for these devices because they worked. Stating they could put a good edge on a knife. Plus, they lasted for a long time. (well made) DM

Yes, Electronic only membership is only $10 per year. Go to Buck Collectors Club Inc. website and fill out form. After that, let me suggest to US that he write up his information, take some ID photos and send it in to club and you can have your own publication in the website under the Model 136 heading. If I can do it , so can you. You might even get published in the club newsletter. How's that for just $10.

I have a brown box one with one paper with Pat. number on hone, lid slightly damaged ,here on my desk. I will shortly show photo of it on BCCI website.

Ok, here are two 136's I could get my hands on quickly. Both have the paperwork, both boxes are maroon and one is stamped model 136 with 'patent pending'. The other is stamped with the patent number. DM
