I was instructed to jump on one if I ever found one for sale. I snagged one off of the fleebay. Just curious what to expect from it.

Thanks and Merry CHRISTmas!

tin timmy, welcome. If your speaking of Buck's model 137 Steel Master? They were offered with a coarser side and fine side steel & a handle with a lock. It came with a slant top pouch leather sheath. They work and are not so common. DM

Yes, Buck mfg. that. Users say they work. It clamps on to the spine of the blade and you use it on a stone in regular edge leading sharpening strokes. There is 2 different stampings on them and different colored boxes. Good luck in your search. DM

I had one my Dad threw out in a fit of tidying up the work bench. I had to admit I didn't use it so it might as well go.
My problems, as I recall, were that it wanted too steep a bevel for my tastes, it needed a very long stone, it would have to be moved along the blade unless you had a tremendously wide stone, and I couldn't see how it could work on the curve to the point.

You could run it with a same thickness, short board butted against the stone. Then to work the curve of the blade, required a little lifting of the knife handle with a sweep. Yes, the angle it gave was rather steep, 19-20*. Still, they allow you a way to obtain a sharp blade. The device came with a rubber insert for the clamp to grip the blade. By using this on only one side during sharping this allowed about a 2* finer adjustment. So, now were putting a 17-18* angle on the blade and this is a decent angle for a general use blade.

I bought one (new) 25 or so years ago; works great for re-beveling an edge. It allows some latitude of angle by where you clamp it to the blade. l wish Buck would bring them back.
