I have used Buck knives for years and they have never let me down. My question is Cabelas sells a brand of knife Alaskan Guide Series by Buck these knives have S30V steel, how does this steel hold its edge compared to Bucks regular steel and are they harder to sharpen, most of the time I just use Lansky Crock Sticks to sharpen my knives. Appreciate the info.

you will like that s30v
a little longer to sharpen but worth it..
good knife at a good price..

Welcome!

I'm sure someone will be along shortly who can answer this better than I so I will pass for now. However, most people seem to really like the Cabela's line of Bucks. I just don't care for the blade coating myself.

Mark,Welcome.334dave statements are correct.S30V steel is made to slice and cut, deer, game, apples, cheese, summer sausage,ect..For whittling hardwoods, take care not to give the blade a push and flip type cut.Using crock sticks it will take a while to sharpen.Diamond stones work better on that steel. However, its a great knife.DM

You will really like the Alaskan Guide 110. I use the Lansky Diamond set for touch ups. I really haven't dulled the knife, so I really cant' say how difficult re-sharpening would be.

The S30V will hold its edge longer than the "regular" Buck steel.
It will also be somewhat harder to sharpen, as already mentioned.

If you don't let it get too dull, you can use your Lansky Crock Sticks.

Otherwise you'll be better off getting some diamond hones.

Anyway, it's a great knife.

Welcome to the Buck forum!!

I have enjoyed using a couple of the AG 110's during deer season. The two of them have taken me through most of the season with out having to take time to sharpen. and I use the diamond hones to sharpen them.

There is a note in the packaging of those AG knives that says Buck will resharpen for free. I don't exactly know how that works tho.
