Does anyone have any information on these knifes.

Why did Buck discontinue them

What was the original idea behind them

Welcome Tanktrek. I'm sure someone will jump in and help you...I'm a newcomer to the Buck forum myself.

Good luck.
:)

Hey Tank...
Based on what I read by doing a forum search for this knife, it appears to be something they were trying out for the Navy SEALS. Do a "search" and there are several hits for it.

Welcome to you and PlowBoy.

(PB, how ya doing after your ditch fall? Hope you're ok.)

I have one. They are a survival/dive type knife. Extremely strong. They are thick and fairly heavy because of that. I can't answer why Buck no longer catalogs them but my guess is that it has to do with how many they sold. Something doesn't sell very well then any company may look to replace it with something they think will sell better. Quite a shame, it's a fine tool.

I have a couple of the Intrepid Models - chisel point and tanto. They are big, heavy and strong. Very simple construction but that is a plus in this type of knife.

Hi
I bought a Buck Intrepid 1 Tanto a few years ago in England.
Its a workhorse of a knife.
I was looking at all the differing knives I have from allover the world a short while ago.
The thought crossed my mind along the lines of :
" What knife would I choose to take with you if you had to depend on it in a survival situation"

I think the intrepid1 would be a candidate for me with its ease of maintenance & multiple cutting edges & I have used mine hard.

BTW, I remember reading something a while back that said the knife was the inspiration of a design by Kit Carson.
True or not ?...I dont know.

Great Knife though.:)

Cheers

Wow!!! Kit Carson the legendary western scout??? That is cool!!

No Kit Carson the custom knife maker of today and YES it is true. :)

I thought of Kit Carson the stripper [along with Candy Barr and Kitten Kaboodle] but noticed he was from Merry Old, so I figured he wouldn't know any legendary strippers... :p

I never heard of any knife maker named Kit Carson...although Buck does have a crotchety old geezer named Wilde Bill Cody...

And I understand there is a custom bicycle builder named Jesse James... :)

Hi
Dutch or Nederlanders as you wish:)
Currency is Euros.
The Netherlands has very strict laws on firearm & knife.
Firearms laws are worse than UK...thats going some !
All that matters little...converting from the Guilder to the Euro has done little for the Dutch economy so ironically, they cant afford those knives either;)

Anyway, there is alot of out of production US pieces that crop up here but not cheap for $$$ conversion.
What the heart desires, the wallet will support...eventually.

Cheers

While I think on it,
Heres a pic of a Knife I saw at a show in England that I could not afford at the time, that inspired me to purchase the Intrepid :-
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r2/logun1/IMG_2171.jpg
A Farid T9000 Sanmai Damascus.
The Intrepid has similar lines...well, I thought so at the time !;)
Two years later the Maker contacted me & sold the very Demonstration knife
I had wanted for less than he wanted but what I could just afford.

Everything comes to those that wait.. & the Intrepid lives on.:)

The sites useless now but the front page is still there...

Unlinked from the front page you could find a gallery if you wished an in it this version of the chisel point...

It was publicly stated in Buck's press materials on the knife when it was in production and a simple Google search will tell you the same thing. You will also find Kits name mentioned in these very forums. (ie http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=460227&highlight=Kit+Carson )

Just because you haven't heard of something or someone doesn't mean it isn't in fact the case...

Just because you haven't heard of something or someone doesn't mean it isn't in fact the case...

Right you are! And I'll be the first one to admit my ignorance... :)

There are many knife makers I have not heard of...and it is quite interesting to read of their accomplishments and look at their handiwork...but my original comment on Kit Carson was quite honest: if it was the frontier scout, I would be delighted but not entirely surprised...was it not Jim Bowie who commissioned the knife that bears his name??? ;)

...And thus legends are born...

Is that Damascus Farid edge-beveled/sharpened on one side only???

That must be 3/8" thick... :D

No:D
Its sharpened both sides, ie symmetrical about the spine or near as dammit.
Its pretty thick:D
About 1/4" or 6.35mm in new money.
Crucible steels supplied CPM420v core & stainless damascus either side.
Its quite brutal to some but I like its looks.

Some of Farids work pieces are a little clumsy imho.
This is one of my favourites ! (sorry)

Cheers
