Looking to add one more fixed blade for deer hunting/skinning and this model looks awesome for the task. Love the up-swept blade and the brass guard. Read the blade is 420HC. Anyone out there using one for hunting and game prep? I heard the folder model was dropped from production. Amazon has em for around $120 which is not bad for a beauty like this.

The 401 & 402 were Buck's top of the line models when they brought them out in 1970. The 401 remains popular and from time to time Buck will bring out the fixed or folder with up grade steel and handle material. I don't use mine on game but some here do and say they work well. DM

I like the Kalinga, I would think it would be a great knife for what your thinking. S30V. Nice knife.

Mak, it looks like that would cut up your apple at lunch time too. A good daily companion. DM

I carry one as my EDC, does everything a knife should do. Buck should bring them back to production, many comment on how nice it is and want one but they are very hard to find. If you see one, buy it.

Thanks for the pics as well as positive comments. Would have been tempted over the Alpha Hunter last month. That curved blade should make an excellent skinner. Sure I could score one if I get the urge. I notice the prices even on the fixed blade model are a lot less on-line than Buck advertises.

Buck sells at retail. If they sold for less than their distributors then no one would carry their product. Same thing with ZT, Kershaw, CRKT, Case, etc.

Yep I see. Just gettin more into knives lately and have been pleased to see Buck knives are priced quite reasonable at many locations and online. Next for me is that Buck-Tops CSAR. For under $100 it looks like a steal!

It is. That said, it's 154CM, with G10 scales, and a liner lock.
In comparison, Buck's Vantage Force Pro also has G10 scales, and liner lock, but you get the upgrade of S30V, and a blade shape that many find more useful. It's also about $10-15 less than the CSAR.
Not trying to shoot down the CSAR at all. Just pointing out another great option at that price range that TO ME would offer an even better value.

Thanks for the tip 19. Already learned quite a bit from forum members on my second day. So many models, makes, steels, it can be mind boggling to find certain knives a novice may not know exist. Trying to cover the bases and get a collection of knives for different purposes. Not a bad addiction to have at all. LOL

I'm relatively new myself. Only a little over 6 months in, and my mind is still swimming with the amount of info. This is a field of interest that is both very deep and very broad.
I'm sure I'll still be learning the fundamentals in another 6 months from now.
