I was at a fleamarket yesterday and a guy had quite a few kitchen knives for sale, looked like all decent stuff in fact. I saw he had a very large I think I would call it a carver stamped Buck. He said it was from the Emperors set from the 70s and it was the largest knife in the set. He wanted $70 just for the one knife, which I was more than I wanted to spend and more than I had anyway. Any Info on them? Should I go back another weekend and get it?

That seems high to me.
You can sometimes find the whole set of three with the wooden wall case for about double that.
I think Armand got a whole set once at a yard sale for $5.00.

A few photos of the Empress Trio, notice the black Micarta handles (burgundy is more common), that came in a wooden wall hanger:

I wanna say it was black, but It was the so smooth you couldnt really see the mircata grains anymore. If Im ever up that way maybe ill talk him down. Thanks for the info, what kinda steel was used for the knives?

Congratulations on the win mars. You got the big beautiful carver. The jewel in the crown of the Empress Trio. And just in time to carve into some roasted turkey.

I have a set of 4 Buck steak knives that are similar cept they are partially serated. also have black micarta handles, bought them in the early 70s from Buck in San Diego

I think there is the small listed up as well, but the blade looks way too pitted to be saved as a useable kitchen knife. But still tempted
