very cool where did you hunt ? our moose season just ended ... moose won this season

Montana, our season opened on Sept. 15 and they are in the rut, there are only 4 permits given in the area we got this bull and we were lucky enough to draw one.

Congrats to you and your son. What caliber rifle did he use on the moose. Only whitetails where I live.

Looks like one of those Ruger compacts, so most likely a .308 Winchester or maybe a 7mm/08.

Great pictures and a real fine head on that moose.

My congratulations to your son! I'm sure he's one happy fellow.

It's also grand to see the family being part of this occasion.

:)

Tom, nice score for your son, we know you're proud! As you already know, BG42 is the right choice for any occasion

Hi honesttom,

Wow...very nice Bull!!!! That is a memory you and your son will share for a lifetime. That is way cool my Buck brother....where is the photo of your son helping with the skinning and meat packing process???? Come on now let the little man play with your Buck knives...LOL.

Pretty cool HonestTom...
Thanks for using both the BG-42 and the S30V on that critter and reporting what ya like best.
I have always preferred the BG-42 but never used it on anything quite like that...so I considered my preference a bit questionable.
Your real world application in "field work" assists me in validating my steel snobiness ;)

Great pics BTW. Thanks!

The rifle is a Ruger--- cal. 243
...I have Model 100's in .243 and .284...Up in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota some of the city guys used those .243's for black bear...We called 'em "FAR" rounds...You'd "Fire And Run"...:p...Nice shootin'...:)

Maybe he was trying to set up a situation where he could take on a wounded moose with that BG-42 110.

Us Buckaroos will do anything to get a chance to use one of our many Bucks.

:D

You shot a moose with a .243????

Tell us the story, please.[/QUOTE

Moose ed's wedding-25.jpg We got out on the second day (sunday) of the season, the 16th and hunted along a creek bottom where i've seen moose in the past, it didn't take long and we spotted this cow and calf along the road so we got out of the truck and tried to call in a bull, but no luck so we went farther down the road to another creek,

Moose ed's wedding-26.jpg here we spotted an old cow with no calf, so i thought we might have better luck callin in a bull, so after about 15 minutes of calling

Moose ed's wedding-29.jpg this young bull came in, i know it's hard to see but he has about a 22 to 25 inch spread, my son wanted to get him but i persuaded him we should wait for a bigger bull because it's only the second day of the season and we still have two and a half months left to hunt, this was a great day because we got to see the 4 moose.

Monday was a busy day so we couldn't get out to hunt.

Tueday when school got out we went to another spot i knew but didn't see any moose.

Wed. another busy day, piano practice for the kids, and taekwond practice

Thursday was early out for the kids so i told Tommy to hurry up and get home and i'd take him hunting, his cousin wanted to go so he went with us.
Tommy wanted to go where we seen the moose on our first outing so i took him there, we got to a spot on the creek with lots of willows and back water and spotted a calf moose

DSC03860.jpg with the calf moose was this young bull, he has golf ball sized nubbins on his head, i called to see if i could bring in a bigger bull and after about 20 minutes we heard some noise in the brush and out stepped a bull with about a 35 inch spread and behind him was a big cow, Tommy wanted us to get him in the worst way but i talked him out of it because i knew there were bigger bulls in this area and we already have one hanging on the wall about this size. The one we have on the wall is one i killed when is was 16. So we passed on this bull and went farther up the creek to another spot. We just got out of the truck and i immediatly spotted three moose across the meadow feeding on some willows, they were about 350 yards and there was no mistaking the bull, i told tommy, theres your bull, but first i better look in the binoculars to see if he's a shooter and Tommy said to me , you're joking right Dad, he's huge, I said i know lets go get him.
We went down to the creek and had to cross it, it was about waist deep and Tommy's cousing was a little nervous (6th grader) so i had him stand by a tree along the creek and wait for us, once across the creek i spotted a nice log that would be a great rest and would put us about 80 yards away from the bull, we got to the log but the bull walked into some thick willows so we waited, the wind is in our favor and also the roar of the creek made it easy for us to get close without being heard, to our left out stepped a calf, then a second calf, they started feeding and coming towards us, i was worried they would see us before the bull came out, they got within 35 yards of us then out stepped a cow, we could see the bull behind the cow but we didn't have a clear shot, i could see that the bull wasn't going come out in the open and he was feeding away from us and if we moved up about 40 yards we'd have an opportunity to get a shot, so as soon as the cow and two calves were looking the opposite direction Tommy and I we moved up without being seen or heard and the bull stuck out his head and neck in a nice opening in the willows and i told Tommy there you go, shoot him in the neck or head and Tommy shot and down he went stone dead, i can still see it, his body dropped like a rock and his head and rack followed. Tommy shot the bull just under the left ear.

DSC03861.jpg first picture taken of Tommy and the bull, he was a little nervous to get too close at first, also behind him about 35 yards was the cow and two calves. We went back across the creek and got my nephew and told him the good news, he said i heard the shot and knew we got the moose.
I know a rancher that lives down the road about a mile, so i went to his house and asked him to help us get the moose out, so he came down with his tractor and picked it up for us and loaded it in the back of the truck. If it wasn't for the tractor we would of had alot of work ahead of us.

Tommy called home and told mom and sister the good news, it took us about and 1 1/2 to get home and when we got there, we had lots of help, waiting for us was the whole family, including my 2 brothers, grandma and grandpa's, a brother in law and a couple friends. What a great experience to share with the whole family.
