Howdy All,
It's been a while since I've posted here on BF but that was for a pretty good reason. I just got back into the US from Iraq a few weeks ago and have been pretty tied up.
Prior to my leaving, I was posting here like a maniac with some of my concerns on the Buck Strider line of knives. I took my concerns to the folks at Buck and did they ever listen, and act on them.
Joe Houser and Wild Bill went way out of their way to make sure that my Solution was just what I needed prior to my leaving for the war.
During combat operations, I used the Solution and my 880SP folder for just about every task imaginable. (With the exception that no Iraqi's ever got that close to me nor me to them. I prefer to keep my enemy at rifle or pistol range.) I did use my knives for everything from fingernail hygiene, to opening ammo crates, to making shelters and hides, to whipping up a rather nice pot of gumbo (for lack of anything else to call it) along the banks of the Tigris River.
The Buck Strider knives never failed me. That's the bottom line.
I did on occasion touch up the edge with a set of ceramic sticks but for the most part, knife maintainence was low on a very loooooooong list of priorities.
My 880SP Folder developed a little bit of rust around the thumb stud from my lack of care but niether knife ever performed to a level less than I needed right then and there. To me, that's what it is all about.
When I returned to Camp Pendelton, I made my way south the the Buck factory at El Cajon, CA. The reception I enjoyed there was great. I met Josh Rummerfeld who is the catalyst behind a lot of the partnership with Strider knives. A reserver Marine himself, we hit it off very well and I ended up spending a couple of hours there touring the plant and meeting folks.
Before leaving, I decided to donate the two knives that I carried for the war back to Buck. At last sighting, they were residing in a case in the offices section of the plant. I think there will be a photo of me presenting the knives to Joe Houser in an upcoming Collector's Club News letter.
I can ramble on here for a good while and all of it will say the same thing. The knives that I carried and the service from Buck were just plain outstanding. I will continue to be a Buck knives user for years to come. As a side note, I was a little dissapointed when I got to the Factory Store and they were sold out of Mayo/Buck TNTs. I am really looking forward to trying one of those babies out.
Thanks again to all of the folks at Buck who work hard everyday to put a fine, American made, product on the market.
