I'm a big Buck knife fan. Just read on another forum, they said most Buck knvies are now made in China. Then another guy said only 15% are, the rest are made in Idaho. Who's right or what's the truth?

You have to be very careful on who you buy from. There are reputable Buck Dealers now, one is Copper and Clad another is SK Blades. If you go on ebay go at your own risk unless you are a seasoned buck collector. China even prints the boxes to look like Buck boxes. If you stick to buying from Buck directly expect to pay almost double the price for any knife. If you buy from SK knives or Copper and Clad you will have no problem with the knife being a real Buck. I look at ebay, buy very little. There are many very convincing fake buck knives. Those are just estimates of percentages you heard, nobody knows the real amount of fakes that are brought in except for buck maybe.

Both are potentially correct.

Someone will chime in with proper and accurate information.

Basically, 15% of the entire model line up may be made in China.

This 15% of the entire model line up, could represent the majority of "total knives" manufactured by Buck. Majority could mean anything over 50%.

Walmart wants Buck's brand on their shelves.
Walmart wants a particular price point
Buck wants Walmart's volume
Buck can't meet Walmart's price point with US models.

WM considers the profitability of Buck's brand as a whole so you'll see a mix of US and foreign made Bucks at Wm.

Look for the American Flag on the box, or on the package in a store or on a dealers image of the knife in question. You can check in the thread at the top of the Buck forum home page about fake Buck knives. Buck is going after fake Buck sellers, if you find you have bought one you can contact Buck and give them the sellers information.

For Buck forum folks, it is a policy that BF does not allow any bashing of overseas knife seller thru the use of improper names or name calling. I am assuming Davy just misspelled Chinese. But, overseas Bucks have been made in at least two other countries besides the main contractor in China. Comment on your discussions with the term 'overseas' or 'imported' and you will be fine.

I am busy with other stuff so am not going to catalog to count American flags. But, I agree with above statements. It is less and less each year.

This comes up often and there are folks out there with the correct information on the model numbers of the china made knives. No fixed blade knives are made in China (at one time some were). No 110's or 112's are made in China.

The Selkirk line is made in China. It's the reason I don't have any. You can tell by the model number on the 300 series as well. An American made larger stockman is a 301, the Chinese equivalent is a 371. A little research can steer you in the right direction if you want to avoid them. And as others have said earlier...go to a reputable dealer and you'll be safe. I'd stick with Copper and Clad or SK Blades. I'm definitely not an expert on this, but some guys here are and if you ask they will be more than willing to help if you have any questions....

Selkirk is made in China, I actually got a Buck Vanguard for Christmas and it was a Chinese counterfeit and had an American flag on the box.
It kinda looked like a Vanguard but it wasn't one lol! It's actually a decent hunting knife..

It came off of Ebay no surprise there.. You gotta watch that site, it's full of counterfeit blades..

Look at the sticky above, I think it is the fourth from the top it is all about fake and counterfeit Buck knives.

I think a lot of sellers repeat this partial truth to justify their jacked up prices on older Bucks. Have heard it at flea markets and a few gun shows. I think some are ignorant, some confused, and some out right liars looking to justify selling a hard used Buck 110 from the 80's with no sheath for $150.

To me it appears that most of their products are American made, and that's great because I will never buy an overseas buck knife.

I don't believe the OP was inquiring about fake or counterfeit Bucks he just wanted to know where the majority of their product line is made, here or overseas. In response to that question the information I have seen is that at its peak 30% of Bucks line was manufactured overseas. Some articles claim it was as high as 50% but I believe that figure to be incorrect.

By late 2011 that had been reduced to 25%. I'm trying to locate the article now but as I recall C.J. Buck stated in an interview that that figure was down to either 14% or 16% and they were continuing to try and reduce the percentage even further.

I just went to Wal Mart and saw several the fake ones for sale there. I reckon the Chinese have to eat too.

For clarification...

There are no "fake" Bucks being sold by WM. They are authentic Buck knives. Designed and manufactured by Buck, to their specifications, and carry the same limited lifetime warranty as their domestic manufactured knives. There is nothing wrong with these "budget friendly" models, nothing.

That being said, buy how you choose, but belittling any foreign made Buck is belittling the brand as a whole.

There is one ebay seller who you are guaranteed a authentic Buck knife. Michael and myself and a few others have bought from before. Looking at reputation and history of the seller will pretty much tell the tale.

We are currently running about 15% import rate. The USA stuff has a flag on the box and the knives will have USA on the blade.

Everything else aside, I recently bought a Buck Bones and Nobleman (both made in China) because they were on sale and am very pleased with both. The Nobleman took apart a few large cardboard boxes with ease and is a great lunch knife. I wouldn't have paid full MSRP for them, I would have put the money towards a custom Squire or something like that, but I now scan the local ads for Buck knives on sale, Chinese or otherwise.
