This was the head line in the San Diego union today.CJ.Buck said yesterday the company is considering a move to either Bend, Ore or Post falls idaho, to lower energy and labor cost. Please Joe, let CJ. know this will be a big loss for El. Cajon and me. The upside would be the hunting would be much better in these locations. I vote for a smaller building in SD.So please reconsider, but I will always be a loyal Buck collector no matter where the company ends up. I have my fingers crossed. Steve St Martin

That's bad news, I kinda liked how if something needed fixing it would only be a 15 minute drive from where I live.

Ouch.

SD County is mighty pricey in real estate though, unless you're way out in the desert.

Of course if they have any more energy debacles with SDG&E then I can understand their need to reduce costs.

Oregon, Idaho, as long as its close to good hunting or fishing I'll have two reasons to visit the new location.

Business is business, Good Luck to Buck Knives and all the employees.

California, bahhh

Just come on over to Indiana. Plenty of cheap power!

..of how expensive it can be to do business here in Southern California...Buck knives paid over $750,000 in electricity alone last year...!!!

Factor in building taxes, water, business taxes, salaries, etc...I'd bet they're probably closer to $2,000,000 going out...

That's a lot of coin guys, a lot of coin!

Joe, tell C.J that we suggested the smaller building, second shift as the main work shift (lower energy costs), conservation where possible, and a quarterly 'Friends of Buck Knives' Buck knife, blade etched as such...

A Buck collector's edition at a slightly raised price of say 25% per knife, with the etching only changing to say something like "1st edition, 1 of 500...2nd edition, 1 of 500", etc...on standard offerings may help. Of course, a display case would be needed... ;)

I'd sign up for that, just to keep you guys here!

Hello Mr. Buck,
Please contact the mayor of Nashville TN. in regards to a possible move. Our city GAVE a large tract of land to Dell Computers in return for their moving a facility here. In addition energy cost in this area are among the lowest rates in the nation. This might be an incentive to consider. I will help by installing and maintaining HIGH EFFICIENCY HVAC sytems AND I PROMISE to buy many more knives :D.
One more point to consider : THE HUNTING IS FINE!!!

Hate to hear that Buck might have to leave SD but if you do have to relocate you could consider the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Carroll County to be exact. It is beautiful here. The deer, wild turkey, bobcats and a hosts of other wildlife are abundant. Just thought you would like to know there are places all over the USA that would love to have a company like Buck. Praying that you have the guidance needed to make the right decision.

Joe, does this mean you may finally be opening the other plant in Tenino?

I kind of wonder if a potential move has as much to do with the present economic state of the company as it does with California's energy and labor costs. :( They're one in the same, of course, but a move can portend many things, including a rocky fiscal ride (just ask Pete Q.) or, on the other end of the spectrum, prudent cost-cutting. Here's hoping that it's only the later.

We'er moving?! How come i am always the last to find out these things? YOu don't suppose they were going to try to sneak off without telling me? I get to work one morning and my key doesn't open my office?
I have to admit it is a nice thought to live somewhere that has trees. Sure we have trees here in San Diego, but man planted them. I would love to live somewhere that God planted the trees!
I guess we will see if or when it happens.
Stay tuned.

Move to Texas we've got cheap energy to spare cause we are the ones that sale it to cali and other states, and think about this thiers no state income tax........

...If you think for one moment that Buck is going to pay to relocate it's staff...(and it's not), and being that 'Oh-Ray-Gone', land O'Knives Aplenty, has well, plenty of 'hightech' knife builder's and factory reps...

Then, and gallows humor aside...if You can't 'correct' the course of the 'Good Ship Buck...then you, yes you, might want to make a pre-emptive 'strike' by taking a walk-about...

I'd suggest the Oregon Knife Collector's Association show next weekend...for starters. ;)

It does my heart good to hear that Buckaroos will always be loyal through thick and thick. It's nice to think of Buck as a log cabin with one little bald guy who builds knives all day. (No, I'm not talking about Joe, ... he doesn't live in a cabin) Building the kind of product that Buck does with the materials they use is a tough job and has to be managed as any good company would. Right now Buck has to make a decision, and I think they'll do the right thing. I napped through my business courses, so I can't say I know myself what the right thing is. And remember, it's not just Buck thing, and it's not just a California thing. The whole dat-burrned market is having a tough time right now. Including firearms. Let's just stay tuned and hope for the best.

Just my $.02
Petey
