Do you think Buck could make a run at doing something similar to GECs method of customs? Like the same models everybody already knows, just several custom handle covers, blade steels, bolster finishes and metals, etc?

I know they already do the Buck a Month thing. But what if they stepped it up to do more variety and several special limited knives?

I'm not suggesting taking anything away from what they do, just in addition to it.

Would you guys be interested? Would enough people be interested or get interested?

They offer a lot of variety, this is just for conversation sake.

A factory sale offers quite a bit of built out models not found anywhere. I'm not f amilar with what GEC does but have you visited Bucks website and built some?

I don't know if any manufacturer makes more customs than Buck. By a large margin. Unless the GEC option is different? Just in the 110 we have Titanium, Brass, Copper, Aluminum, and Nickel. Brushed or polished. Automatic, back lock, liner lock, handle materials are off the charts, Stag, Buffalo, Giraffe, G10, Micarta, Palm, Oak, Ebony and a couple hundred others. Blade steel, 440, 425, 420, S30V, S90V, Damascus, 5160, D2 etc?20200221_115612.jpg 20200221_115537.jpg 20191104_094117.jpg 20191025_141515.jpg 20190629_214248.jpg 20190917_163835.jpg 20190627_204120.jpg 20190617_223705.jpg 20190613_214122 (1).jpg 20180513_220514.jpg

No offense but I've never seen anyone ask that.

Over 7800 Buck knives on fee bay. 139 GEC. Over 700 Buck Customs.
This has to do with over 100 years of Buck knives.

It was just curiosity.

Basically GEC offers a completely different pattern every month of the year, sometimes its a popular model from years past, often its something new but a traditional pattern none the less. I wasn't suggesting Buck step out with new models every month, just stuff they already make.

GEC does a lot of unique and well executed handle covers, bone, wood, synthetics, etc, and usually there are four or five different covers a month in limited numbers. Their whole model is set up for doing nothing but semi-custom knives all of the time, so I'm not sure that would be possible with Buck without a major shift, which would probably not be good for overall production.

Yes I have seen the custom shop and have put several together for thinking about. I'm glad they offer it but its different than what I was suggesting, more like Benchmades custom shop. Nothing wrong with that. And at least you get to choose what covers and don't have to worry so much about missing out on a pattern with a particular setup or cover scales.

I have also seen the exclusives offered by a few companies which I also love.

I was just thinking and wondering.

Have you seen this thread? https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/after-buck-what.1719197/ There are many that concentrate on Buck's offerings, but have other brands. There are others that concentrate on another brand but have some Buck knives.

Would I like to have Buck make slipjoints, in the USA, in other patterns with special covers...you bet your sweet bippy! I paid dearly for a commemorative canoe pattern, made by Buck(USA) for A. G Russell. Also, a USA made Buck in a pattern that they no longer make...a California Toothpick, which I will have re-covered. I also have these patterns in other brands.

There is talk of Buck re-tooling and bringing back some of the 300 series to Post Falls, maybe it will happen. When it does maybe they will be able to offer special editions, I hope so.

I try to keep in mind that Buck has to make what they think will be profitable and keep them and their 240+ employees, in business.

Buck has a custom side in their facility.
Maybe Jeff H knows in a month or a year how many standard knives get produced and how ma y custom orders get produced.
Not only can the public order a custom knife in numerous steels, handles bolsters, sheaths etc, their dealers have their own requests only avail to them, once in a while Buck will use o e of my sheaths in a small run at the factory sales.

Yeah GEC does have a lot of variety in slip joint patterns and in different handle materials but they are only in 1095 blade steel and it’s been a long time since they’ve had any stainless slip joints offered. I think they still have some in fixed blades and maybe the field and farm lock back. I do hope Buck gets retooled for the 300 series and a bigger selection of patterns and materials. The 500 series has some good custom shop upgrades and the 110, 112 and other 100 series has a tremendous offering in the custom shop. And there are many SFOs at several Buck dealers. You should shop around for custom builds and check the custom shop on Bucks web site.

For a step or three above the standard production brass and wood 110, you have the Custom shop, and SFO's from SK Blades and C&C, among other dealers.
I've recently seen some NIB Brian and David Yellowhorse 110's on the Big River site, along with a couple others with fancy custom shop or SFO covers and blade cut-outs that are not readily available.

SK blades also did a couple runs of their 'SMOKE JUMPER' SFO 110LT (red FRN handle, CPM154 clip point blade) and 'The Shield' SFO 110LT. (Blue FRN handle, drop point CPM 154 blade)
C&C have the 110 available with a 5160 carbon steel drop point or clip point blade, and a choice of a couple (diamondwood?) wood covers for less that a Custom Shop knife.
C&C once told me the knives with a 5160 blade, regardless of model, were something they were going to keep re-ordering when they ran low. They were going to keep them in stock.

Im not sure of the Model number but the knife is a custom version of the Buck Superglide Bowie.

Thank you very much for the info. I just looked up a non-custom version of the Superglide. Nice, but nowhere near as gorgeous as the one you have. The custom work really makes that knife stand out from the crowd !
