First and foremost I'm not a buck knives aficionado so you have my apologies on that but I figured it would be best to take this one right to the masters :D as its not something (at least I think) you see every day.

Basically a long story short I received an old buck knives retail display case and I'm wondering how old it is and how uncommon these (cases) are. Also I'm wondering if its worth holding onto.

I wasn't able to get a clean shot of them but there are little badges that I think will help ID the age of this case, all most all the badges have stickers on them increasing the price and adding the words "with sheath". The case as you can see from the photos is wood and glass...standard issue hardware store counter top knife display from the looks of it.

I'm hoping the models and prices can help ID from when this case was from.

Badges in the case are as follows:
#119 Special $33
#501 Esquire $37
#107 Scout w/sheath $37
#118 Personal $14
#301 Stockman $22
#118 Personal w/sheath $34
#105 Pathfinder w/sheath $36
#131 Fisherman $25
#102 Woodsman w/sheath $32

Theres only 9 of those badges in the case, but it appears to have slots for 2-3 more knives.

Images are as follows (mega huge images that your browser should resize):

76 - 82... ITE ... :):):) I think...

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking early 90s but I'm not sure so I wanted to ask you guys and I'm more then likely wrong which is why I asked.

Beyond my 110 I'm not really to savvy on Buck Knives so I'm just wondering how common one of these are, and if its going to be a massive travesty if I were to do some work on it and make it into a storage case for my other toys.

If its one of those things that is somewhat rare I wouldn't do anything to it, but if this sort of thing is commonplace then I won't really have any bad feelings for modifying it.

I agree, late 70s to late 80s, but what do I know. My three are the particle board models....300

Mine doesn't appear to be fiberboard, but it also just seems a bit "newer" to be from that age period. Who knows eh? Previously it was in a box for an unknown time so I guess it could be from that time period.

BTW: Don't be posting photos like that, I'm getting ready to start downsizing and your making me want to go and start buying more:p

I believe that dealer's display case to be at least as old as the early 1970's. Back then our small town sports shop had the exact same model with the top badge showing the knife cutting the bolt and red lining. It sure made an impressive statement of quality blades during my high school years. The retail price buttons were prominently displayed beside each knife with the majority being fixed bladed. There were some folders displayed in that case also. I remember the 301 stockman, 110 and 112 folding hunters and the slipjoint knife with the marlinspike. I remember how high the prices seemed then with the largest fixed blade 6" model being about $22-24!! Later in the mid 1970's they displayed a #501 Esquire with a retail of $18. I bought one and carried one every day for years and still have it. I believe the case to be made of walnut/walnut veneer wood.

Most of the pricing buttons you have are of a much later retail pricing, maybe in the late 80's or early 90's. It sure is nice to see one again. That sporting shop closed years ago and I remember the case still being there on the store's final days. I am sure it is residing in someone's collection today. Thanks for the good photos. It is like taking a trip down memory lane!

Here is a pre-67 display for BUCK knives. The green velvet is not original. However the cutouts for the individual knives are original. It displays all BUCK stamped fixed blade knives at the time. That includes the 120, 121, 119, 118, 116,105, 103 and 102.

Yes, I agree with Tele.. When I first saw it I knew it was not from the 80's or 90's . As I have one from 1982 and I sent pictures to Joe H. and we discussed this at length . Then we checked all the catalogs of the 80's to verify . So, I'm atleast sure of those and yours is not one . I believe that emblem was used from 1967-79 maybe 80 . If yours has the locking door and you have the key please post the key number as that will give us a good date . Or the number may be on the lock itself . Its a real nice display... Thanks for sharing this with us . DM

That what I said 76-82... It could be late 60s... But the 60s ones look a little different... I sure don't know... It could be 70-76... I have a few like it... and only one like the one that I posted and I'm not sure about that one either... ITE ...

Guys, I forgot to comment on how nice your knives looked in the displays . Great !
ITE, I as well have seen some different name plates on some displays . The plate looked of brass and the lettering was similiar to that which is on the Empress Trio display case .
I've bid on those before and got out bid everytime . Years back they went for 100-200$ .
Mine is made of particle board with wood like glue on covering and white paint for the Buck lettering . About 18" wide and 24" tall and 2" deep with 5 plexi-glass shelves with a plexi-glass door which opens the entire front (two hinges and a lock) . These are in the 81-82 catalog with out the swivel base . In 83-84 its near the same display size but now it swivels . A counter top display with red velvet backing . I cleaned my up and it looks good but you guys display's have real wood and metal name plates . Striking . Thanks for letting us look . DM

Unfortunately no lock, it came with a small padlock loop type closure and that padlock is long gone (didn't come with it).

David:

The case that I posted above and another identical case in my collection both have hasps for a padlock but not a built in lock. When I acquired them, neither had a padlock.

The no lock ones I'd say those are earlier . The ones with the locks are 80's-90's . Thats a good indicator as to what you collectors have . I still like looking at your displays . DM

The one that I posted takes a key and as a plexi-glass top... I have some that need a padlock and have Glass tops... ITE

Mine is a glass top and padlock hasp on the back with a pull out tray (from the back). Its quite heavy glass for a display case as I'm used to seeing counter top displays with thin glass for weight savings in manufact>retail store shipping.

Granted it isn't super thick able to stop a hammer blow glass, but its heavy enough that it looks very good and not cheap. The entire case is a very nice presentation and shows off Buck in a very nice way.

Racoon, I think Telechrono's has the pull out tray you mention . I think Scott Hartman's is like that as well . Great displays . DM
