Buck Knives 'rookie' question

Ive used the Buck110 for many years but never dabbled into the finer points of buck knives until I found this site !

I see on some of the Buck 110 knives it will say BG-42 on the blade. But not on too many it seems. Mostly on the "custom knives" Ive noticed it.

I am growing to love S30V for the type things I use my knives on while hunting and chores. For edge retention purposes of an everyday usage knife . . .

So I would be interested to learn more about the bg42 blades and where it stands compared to the others.

Thanks !! -Gary

Gary, I don't know if any one has done a definative test with the two . I'd say they're both excellant steels that you can't go wrong with . DM

Here's some.

Stick with BG-42 and you'll never regret it.

S30V is a powder steel. BG stands for "Bearing Grade." Why take a chance?

;)

Also, here's some good comprehensive information on steel in general....not perfect, but useful.

BG42EDGE,

Thanks for the reply. Wow, you definatly sparked my interest there. Bearing grade . . I like the sound of that.

Can a guy get his hands on a buck BG42 to test it side by side my S30V ? Besides a second hand buy? I cant seem to find any new for sale on Buck's website.

No, there aren't a lot of them around and those that have them are usually hanging on to them in anticipation of an increase in value because Buck will never make any more.

Keep searching e-Bay for BG-42 and one will turn up......but prices are usually pretty high.

In reality, there's probably not a lot of difference in practical application among the premium steels......having the BOS heat treat is likely the most important factor.

Even the steels like 425Mod and 420HC perform with excellence when graced with the BOS heat treat.

Tests are great, but they don't usually prove much.....there are always variables so that people can more often than not challenge the validity of the results.
