I have recently started carrying a small Camillus 881 pen knife that my great-grandfather owned but never carried. I think that it was made back in the early-mid 90's. I think that it is close to if not exactly the size of a Lancer. I will probably buy one with spare change that I have scraped together. If I get one, what variant should I get? Any help is appreciated.

The thrill seekers, unhappy unless hair on fire going 100mph, carry slip joint knives just so the risk of spilling their own blood is imminent. You, however, don't have to go down that road. How about a small pocket carry knife with a lock so you have a chance to spare your fingers? I prefer the Bucklite 424 for EDC. I have 300 series Buck knives to collect but not to use. Here is a photo for your amusement of the 424 sized knives with locks (my EDC Bucklite 424 is on the far right):

Oregon, is this about right?
CLOSED LENGTH : 3 3/4 INCHES.
INCHES OVERALL : 6 1/2 INCHES WITH MAIN BLADE OPEN.

Also Bucklite 2 Model 424....whats the 2 mean? just wondering.

GREAT LINE UP by the way! &

Have a great day!

Or,

Buck 305 Lancer, Rosewood scale, brass bolsters, brass rivets.

Or just a tiny bit larger but fits in watch pocket easily, Buck, 309, Rosewood and silver metal parts, but special emblem. The Ichthus model.

Both available from several online and walk-in stores. 300

Well seeing as how I am a Christian, that Ichthus model is very appealing. Of course being a Christian, I have a soft spot for Buck anyhow. As for Oregon's comment, I have used a 505 for a few years now, but I would still prefer a slip joint knife. Of course, slipjoint carriers do know how to use a knife better!

Your dimensions are right on for the 424 model. Best sourced from our friends in Canada when on sale there for $10.

Please ping me a link to your BL 2 model 424.

I'll throw my hat into the ring, I would be go Classic or Vintage, how about a BUCK MODEL 703?
I like this choice so I can sheath it If want. Newly aquired for my personal pocket knife, The 300's I own were a little light also recently aquired a 505 and that was way to light, for what I wanted for a pocket but perfect for my pocket tackle box for fishing.....smaller than my shrade. The shrade is in the tackle box the 505 will replace it its a bit smaller an lighter.

BLADE: 2" 7/8ths long
Overall length 5" 11/16ths

Buck 703 Colt Knife Pre 1986
Vintage Pre 1986 Buck 703 knife. This is a discontinued Knife. The tang stamp features Old English script. Nickel silver bolsters, liners, handle pins, and inlaid Buck Old English Script shield. Proudly made in the U.S.A. Pre 1986. Three blades: clip point, spey, and sheepsfoot. A older premium quality pocket knife no longer in production.

I love to re-purpose I used this old Johnson & Johnson emergency kit we got from the Vets. Fits good in my pocket or coat.

I also agree with USMule..... and I have a 703 in my pocket right now :) (lots of the 703's for sale on the "bay")
In addition to a 424 and a 345.
Then there is a 425 on my keys.
Oh, and a 830 in a sheath on my belt :)

Yep, cargo shorts help for carrying lots of pocket knives. .....hahaha

Here is my 703 that I modified to have Gaboon Ebony handle scales :)

DesertChris, do you have any clue what that sheath model is in my photo? Its unmarked......I got in a batch of sheaths I aquired in a LOT # deal. Oh and also the Button thats a real recent sheath right? with Buck embossed all around the button.

wow thats swwwwwwwweet! Nice choice. thanks for sharing that!

maybe we need a 703 Dedication Thread, go for it! I'm tuckered out with my last 2....LOL

dido's on these #2 too! If you start 703 dedication page I'll throw my new GET on there....

and thanks for showing me these sheaths....they work well for the 703 too.

Do you know what year they came out with that button snap? with BUCK all around the button?

Ben,

If you like the slipjoints, there are a bunch of them.
301, 302, 303, 305, 309 and many more 300 series.
Older ones can have flat ground blades, and newer ones are hollow ground.
the ones with the long nail pull are Camillus or Schrade contracted, and the ones with a nail nick are Buck factory produced.
Each model is a different size with a variety of different blade shapes too.

Then there are the discontinued 700's
701, 703, 704, 705 and 709
All from the Buck factory

This will be a fine work/backup knife to a 340, MT, or SAK. I have narrowes it to a Lancer, Companion, or a Duet. Info on the Duet would be appreciated.

Nope, I have no idea about the sheath history.
Mostly I just buy Bucks that I want, and then carry them around and cut stuff with them.
I only have a few set aside for collecting.

you sound like me, LOL and enjoy just using them! same as me. I hear you.....thanks for all the help!

Hi, Ben. I am a big fan of Buck's 300 series knives. I own a 309 Companion and a 302 Solitaire. My 309 has stainless steel bolsters and black Valox scales, while the 302 has yellow delrin scales with nickel silver bolsters. I believe they discontinued the yellow delrin this year, along with charcoal dymondwood scales, but you can still find them around. My yellow delrin 302 is a little on the slick side, but very attractive and still usable. The classic black sawcut 309 is all business, and is a solid little knife. I really like wood handles, so I wish I had the dymondwood version, but I seemed to end up with plastic scaled knives, go figure.

P.S. ignore that knife in the middle. I didn't like it as much as my Bucks, so I gave it away.

I like collecting the Lancers but too small in the hand as users for me. ( 2XL glove....:o )
