Buck Mayo 172 or Bradley Alias?

If you can get a BG42 version of the Mayo 172, I'd go for that.

If not, I'd go for an Alias.

But, it'll really depend how the knife feels in your hand and which blade shape you like more.

The last time I had either in my hands, I thought they were well made for the money.

Nice, thank you. I don't have the opportunity to actually handle either knife before purchasing. Not many places around me, not any actually, that I know of that have them in stock. So I am buying kind of blind.

AFAIK, Buck Mayo only come in s30v.

I owned a couple of Buck Mayos and handled and alias.

IMO the buck is better executed and better designed. However, I found the this knife was somewhat uncomfortable due to the horn on the top and the bottom as well as the narrowed edge. If you can live with that I can recommend it. One note if you are a tinkerer, the nylon washers will not take favorably to disassembly and reassembly.

The alias is an OK knife, certainly not worth the new price. In the sample I have handled, only two, they both had blade play.

Thanks so much DaveH. I was worried about the handle shape at the top. I really like a sleek shape to my knives for easier carry.

I HATE nylon washers. I thought the 172 was bronze like the alias, but clearly.. I am wrong, again. Thanks for letting me know.

Oh man. I hate hearing that they had blade play. Sounds like I may have to put off getting either one.

Thanks for the link. I am not a premium member so can't search the forum. I appreciate it.

Any knife recommendations? I guess a Sebenza is the only thing thats gonna fill the gap? But its so pricey!!!

Cant help with the 2 knives mentioned.

From my own experience with these situations, you will keep buying substitues until you break down and get a sebbie, so you might as well spare yourself the pain and get the sebbie now, you will be happy.

FWIW, they are frequently sold in the individual for sale production sub forum for far less than the price of a new one.

Thanks guys. Keith, I see them. BUT, I am always too late. It seems like everyone is sitting their refreshing their screens waiting for it. A Seb at a good price never lasts longer than a few hours.

Look for either a 172 or alias for about $120 or less. If you like it you're all set, if you don't you can seel it and not loose money.

Thanks. I will keep an eye out. It seems not alot of people have them, or aren't selling. Appreciate the advice.

I have both. Alias is bigger. Only 1 of the bucks but 3 of the Alias's. That alone should tell you something. Also have 2 Sebenzas 2 custom Mayos a Scott Cook so a few choices in that style of knife. Of all of them the Alias finds its way into my pocket 75% of the time. The Mayo or Cook would more often but just to expensive and harder to replace. I just have a hard time warming up to the Sebe. Just tighten the pivot pin and put a little locktite on the screw and that takes care of any blade play on the Alias.

Thanks for letting me know Svolk. I think that I want to hold out for a Sebenza cause I am so inconsistent on what I want to do that any other buy would be regretted down the road.

you know i was the same as you untill i pulled the trigger on my alias. cnat say anything bad bout it. just put a little superglue on the pivot screw and never worry again. i always carry mine adn it slices like a demon.

Yep I understand. Had both my sebes first. Just found when the alias came it saw a hell of a lot more pocket time. You will end up with both sooner or later and see if i am not right.
