Buck Mayo Kaala-has anyone added scales to this beauty?

I just bought one of these and love the design and the blade, but since I often wear a necker, am now seeing the need to have scales added. My preference would be G-10 or maybe canvas micarta, something that would aid in gripping this knife when withdrawing it. Have any of you that own one of these ever dome this, or do you know if the Buck Custom Shop will do it?

The sheath I'm not crazy about, but that's an easier fix than the scales if I want to get some custom kydex.

I added paracord as a handle wrap to my Kaala. It fills the hole that catches in the Kydex sheath. Unsecured like that, the necker falls out easily. A different sheath is needed. I gifted my Kaala away - eventually added an ESEE Izula II - a bit much for a 'necker', but a great small knife - with great scales.

I havent. I've considered paracord. I know someone did on this forum, I'll see if I can find it.

Ah, here it is.

Thanks for that link. Those are some nice looking scales, very attractive! I hate to say it, but for a neck knife my tastes lean more to the utilitarian, almost "tactical" style, hence the desire for some thin G-10 or micarta.

I'd use paracord as a last resort, but I agree, that sheath will likely have to go.

Yup, flatlander did my Kaala. Handled it with desert ironwood. It lays on the table next to my recliner unless it's in my hand. It's butchered a lot of steaks, pork chops, and anything else I need to butcher. I love it and can't imagine opening my mail without it. I've been known to dress in traditional kilt and hose and my Ironwood Kaala makes a very nice replacement for the traditional Skian Dubh. It's my everyday user because I user, everyday!!

I keep mine by my desktop pc in my office. I have opened lots of mail and cut up lots of boxes with it. Great little knife.
I still don't understand why Buck doesn't put some handles on themselves...maybe some paperstone.

I did one a while back - makes the knife a lot more useable. You will have to find another sheath though.

I lucked out over on Candle Power Forums.

One the members there posted a thread showing off the kydex he was making primarily for HDS lights, so I asked him about making a combo rig for a spare 1911 mag plus the light. Here's what he made me.

I liked it so much, I sent him a BHP mag to make another and also sent him the Kaala for a replacement sheath. I also asked him to paracord wrap it, too. Here's a pic of the two of them together.

Here's a link to the whole thread in case anyone's interested. Really great work and the fit of the Kaala in that sheath and the paracord is excellent. Got them at a great price and with very quick turnaround, too.

I made a sheath, Ground some Jimping on the spine and worked a piece of 1" tubular webbing over the handle. Looks rough but works and feels great. I clip it to my titanium necklace.

I think Buck should do the same thing with the Kaala that Spyderco does with thier Mule.

I like it! Very clean, simple, and functional. Where did you get the titanium necklace?

I para wrapped the knife and sheath a few years back. It worked out very well.
