I know it is kind of an apples and oranges kinda thing, but could someone with both give me a quick comparison, (comparison pics would be awesome). Thanks, Josh

You can find the 705 online for about $100 less than the Buck/Mayo.

The 705 is totally ambidextrous.

The Buck/Mayo is such a tank that many lefties don't care that it's not ambidextrous.

The 705 has the handy and addictive axis lock.

The Buck/Mayo has the super-sturdy framelock.

The 705 has 154CM steel and can handle almost all of your cutting needs.

The Buck/Mayo has S30V steel and can handle almost all of your cutting needs.

Unless it's a limited edition with exotic steel, you can pass on the 705 and know it'll be around when you need it.

The Buck/Mayo probably will be around, too, but why wait until later unless you're short on fundage.

Edited to add:

But these will keep you from being able to afford Benchmade's 733-02 or Spyderco's ATR, so consider all differences irrelevant. :D

Get the buck. In the $200 price range it is, in my opinion, the best folder you can buy at the momment.

And you can try out a Buck for only $20.50 right now. See the link in my signature. Seriously though, I'll have a Buck review thread going fairly soon, once we get seven more participants for the passaround.

Having carried the BM 705 and the Buck Mayo, I think the Buck Mis a higher quality knife. Fit and finish is on par with the Chris Reeve knives that I have. I agree with dylan_d. It's the best folder in the two hundred dollar price range.

ditto that.

I have both knives. Each is nice, but if you have to choose between the two, get the Buck/Mayo. It's a pleasure to use and to carry.

I'm a big fan of the Buck/Mayo also. The 705 is a great knife too, and it should be remembered that the 705 is a smaller knife with a >3"
blade. The Buck/Mayo is over 3" and the OAL is noticeably longer also.

...I will probably hate you.

It's this. A 3.6" spearpoint blade made of S30V, winewood scales, the axis lock, phosphor-bronze washers, green-anodized spacers, and a stainless steel pocket clip that looks snazzy. The clip looks like the Benchmade 921's clip, but it doesn't chew on pockets. Joe at American Heritage Sports might be able to hook you up with one at a very good price.

Hate me the ATR is available. :)

I keep finding the Buck clipped to my pocket - it seems to be in the process of taking over the number one spot - I never thought anything would replace my Benchmades.

Is that because it meets your uses, sense of esthetics, and comfort levels, or does it have a mind of its own? :)

I've had my eye on the BM705 for quite some time, but never got around to snagging one.

I've had my Buck / Mayo since March-ish and I absolutely LOVE it.

It's been my EDC since I got it. A "must have".

Mike

P.S. I've had 4 Mayo TNT's and while this Buck isn't the same as a "real" TNT, it's one heck of a knife.

I don't like that version too much, but the Ares is my favorite production BM. I think the best variant is either the 730 CFHS or the 730 with the black g10 scales and d2 blade

I am also a fan of the Buck/Mayo. I was in the first group to get one and although I like BM knives, I would have to pick the Buck. If for no other reason, for the edge holding ability that this knife has. I haven't seen any of the S30V blades that are at a lower RC that will hold an edge as good as the ones that are around 60RC.

I think the 730CFHS is the best working version, but pictures don't do the 733-02 justice. You'd have to stare at it in person and hold it. It's a high-tech antique, but in a good, functional way. My favorite production BM is the 921.

Of the two choices newknifeguy mentioned, I think the chorus is loud enough and clear enough to say:

The Buck/Mayo TnT is what you want and we all think you'll love it.

:)

I just bought my Buck/Mayo recently, and it sees limited use as my "getting dressed up and going out" knife. Very high quality IMHO. I get a lot of ooohs and ahhhs when I whip out the Buck/Mayo. I have a 710HS that I've been using around the house. You can't dismiss the quality on Benchmade. I would definitely consider the Mayo, they can be found online in the $200 range.
