I wonder where or how did the BUCK Co. come up with the system of assigning the different style knives with the model #?? why a three digit number as apposed to a single digit number?and wyh odd numbers as apposed to even numbers?

Hmmm, aren't 110, 118, 500, 102, 532, etc. even numbers? ;) Those are just a few off the top of my head. There are a bunch more.

I have no idea why they picked the three digit numbering system. That probably goes so far back no one will know.

I think MJB, is refering to his favorite series the 300's as those utilize mostly a odd numbering system . Buck started the three numbering system in 1960 beginning w/ the 102 I think that one or the 103 those two are for sure close . They had already been loosely using a two numbered format so once they started this new era . A three digit system made sense as something new and there were at that time 3 Buck's ( Al, Chuck and Frank) . By the time the slip locks came along the 100's were getting filled and the kitchen cutlery line plus some sharpening stones were making up the 200 numbers so the 300's were the next designation . You want to do odd numbers this time ? Frank, yelled back, sure ! Then here we are trying to figure it out . It was probably no more complex than that . DM

Plumb sometimes its the obvious thats the hardest to see, 110,118,500,102,532, 300 series 700 series, 100 series. If they started with the 100 series wouldn't the 200s naturally come next, unless there was a method to the maddness. Hmmmmm

I can see now where you were getting the odd #, but then there's the 600 series, the 800 series, the 200 series, the 400 series. ;)

Guys the 200 series did come out before those you named . The model 200 Empress Trio was being made in the early 70's perhaps earlier and the 206 Windsor Steak knife set was at that time as well . The 401 Kalinga came out in 70 or 71 and the Akonua 402 about a year later . So, the first 300 was right in there close . DM

Ok I see the odd/even thing is a wash but the 3 digit # is a wonder. Hoyt was just sitting around thinking and he said this will be the 102 not the Buck #1 or whatever it doesnt make sense

Not to throw gas on a fire, but the number that makes it odd or even is the last number. As for the 3 digit system, why not? I mean, which is easier to remember 3 numbers or a bunch of letters and numbers.

It's sure alot easier to make sense of than the system (??) Case uses. ;)

aparently no one really knows, so We can spit ball all day long and pick apart each other posts. I was hoping for an informed answer. Maybe there isn't one

Didn't intend it to be "spit balling". It just seemed from the wording of your first post that you were saying that there were no even numbered model numbers which is incorrect. First number or last number, there are many models either starting with an even number or ending with an even number.

If that wasn't what you meant, then sorry for correcting you.

No harm no foul PLUNB, spit balling is just a colorful term for guessing, It seems as though that part of the OP is what stuck in peoples heads, that part was squashed in the second post and I quess if I had thought bout it a little harder I wouldn't have posted any thing about odd/even #, I know that there are even # knives . I was just trying to find out if there was a reason for this #ing systen as apposed to something else. If there is no reason than fine, I can live with "Thats Just The Way It Is". If there is no story than lets just let this thread fall off the page.
